The EL is by definition second rate. It is the second biggest European competition. The ECL is third rate.

It's not an insult - it is fact. It does not mean the competition is shit, or that it wouldn't matter if we won it, but if we're going to pretend Frankfurt, Bodo, this United side, Alkmaar are 'first rate' European teams, we're lying to ourselves. We watch the first rate ones in the CL - PSG, Barca, Liverpool etc.
EL is a prestigious trophy imo. Better than winning fa cup or carabao. Added bonus place in champions league and play in super cup. CL and premier league is only above EL.

The teams in this EL have been utter garbage...nice to win the cup of course but no great technical or exciting football feat....
Instead of Spurs v Fish Farmers I watched Utd as I thought Athletic Club were the one classy outfit left in the competition then I watched with amazement as Slab Maguire does his right wing trickery for their first goal and the Athletic defender pleading that it was no foul for the pen.
Just shows the strength of the PL when two shitshows can stroll through semi finalists.
I won't celebrate the cup with quite as much vigour as previous European trophies but I will celebrate nonetheless and then celebrate again when this gobshite leaves.

It’s not better than winning the FA cup. The FA cup is significantly harder to win. The only reason it could be considered better is if you’re chasing CL qualification. For us it’s better right now for that reason.

The EL isn’t bad but it is very much a battle of the sides who aren’t good enough for the top tier of Europe. And frankly a lot of not great sides play in the top tier.

It would be huge for us to win - we’re on a drought, anything would be huge. But it’s only really prestigious if you’re a Sevilla, Frankfurt type club.

100% its still the third most prestigious trophy a club can win. its been diluted a few times now but id still rather win europa league over the FA cup.

the reason they changed the european cup into the CL is because the eufa cup was harder to win than the european cup. the champions league basically merged the eufa cup and the european cup.

european supercup against barcelona would be hilarious.

Personally I would be happy to win any of the cups while we try to get to the higher level as has been posted plenty of times going from around fourth or fifth to really challenge for the title takes a hell of an investment etc something we certainly will not do with our owners .In the meantime bring on the cups .

The FA cup is more prestigious than the Europa League. The Europa league is more rewarding if you're a side chasing another way in to the CL.

The FA cup is the #1 domestic cup in the best league on the planet. The EL is a best of the rest comp which excludes all the top teams in Europe.

no one outside of england gives a shit about the FA cup....and barely anyone in england does, the best teams dont take it seriously anymore.

no domestic cups are more prestigious than the europa league. domestic cups are domestic cups...the europa league is the whole of europe.

90% of fans for any club would be taking europa league over a domestic cup.

taking away CL qualification, the europa league is far better for a club to attract players to the club than a domestic cup.

People actually think The Fa cup more prestigious than the UEFA/Europa.

Yeah mate, who wants a competition with teams like Manchester City and Liverpool involved when you can play Bodo Glimt in a semi final, Rangers can get to the final and your biggest obstacle is Eintracht fucking Frankfurt.

God some people are ludicrously thick.

Trophy cabinets don’t remember the teams you played on the way.

Countless FA Cups have been won by teams that didn’t play all the toughest teams en route

The highest prestige competitions involve the best teams. A competition which excludes all the best teams by nature isn't more prestigious than one which includes all the best teams in England from the start, this is such a ridiculous conversation.

Even under Poch we used to treat the FA cup with ten times the respect we did the EL. Most teams do unless they need the CL ticket, it's a non-starter.

Admitting this doesn't make the EL unimportant or rubbish - it would be an amazing thing for the club to win. A fucking league cup would be amazing for us, the same way Newcastle celebrated it like it was the champions league.

And yet, we didn't win either so considering how good that team was, it can't be that easy to win either.

Cool, so let's just leave it there and not get caught up about prestige

The EL? Mate we treated it with contempt under Poch. We rotated our entire team to Dortmund in I think a quarter final, and rotated heavily vs Gent/Genk whoever the other time we were in it .. the rest of the time we were a champions league calibre team. It was also stronger then as CL teams dropped in to it.

It's all about priorities.

Maybe that wasn't such a good idea then. Imagine the way we'd look at that Poch team if they'd won the EL...Imagine what it would have done for the club's reputation.
