Management Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It is a very good thread, those Tifo Football guys are great.

From that analysis, and from reading and watching some other stuff about Ange, it seems like his methodology is to be pretty rigid in the way his teams play. Not that he would set up the press in the exact same way at Spurs that he did at Celtic, but that he wants the squad to have a very deep understanding of what they do and to impose that on the game rather than being reactive.

Very different tactics to Conte, but an analogous philosophy. They aren't Plan B guys. The answer to problems with Plan A is to do Plan A better.

There are benefits to that. I think it helps for integrating depth and youth, the instructions are very clear and that experience can accrue over time. And I think it's obvious that your basic tactical setup will be different as Celtic in the Scottish league versus Spurs in the Premier League. He's not an idiot.

But still, I agree, it's scary to think about our bunch of wasters being set out to play a high risk press against top sides who can ease right through it.

Slot or Nagelsmann would be in a position to do some version of the same thing though. As indeed Mason did the last few weeks. This is the tactical transition we've chosen.

I just watched a video where he said if he has a must win game he isn't going to go in defensively, he's going to go in more attacking, more aggressive and go for it. Players are going to like that, but my goodness, it's going to be a huge difference for them from Conte. It will be sink or swim for a lot of them.

This is a really good analytical thread by Mackenzie. It explains the limitations of Ange’s high press with respect to Celtic’s matches against better European opposition as opposed to the ‘pub league team and manager’ cliches spouted by his detractors here.
It DOES give me cause for concern along with his apparent lack of desire to integrate youngsters. I do wonder if he has a plan B or can develop a plan B against teams who can beat his press. Still happy to give him the chance to find out.
Better players may help negate against better teams

It'll suit our defence if the team is more attacking, even Dier can occasionally put in a quality long ball.

There’s triggers when to press. No team can do it for 90 mins. If they beat the press then by all means drop back in and get the shape. I think the trigger should always be when the ball is played to the FB or wing back maximum 30 yards from the opposition goal. If you win it there you have them out their shape and they can’t recover. We have done it a couple of times this season when PEH or Bentancur has actually won it and we score. We done city with it and scored through Kane but we never done it anywhere near enough because of the managers tactics or we weren’t brave enough to press high up.

I think whats good about Ange is the variety in his attacks. It's not just one way and we'll go about it this way and this way only.

We'll concede a bit from over committing but we'll score loads and play very good football

Levy is fucking it up again. I think Postecoglou can do well in the PL but not working for Levy. If Enic have no plans to sell up they need a manager who is more of a yes man and builds a team quietly and patiently. That man is Potter.

Looks like levy is opting for the cheapest option out there.
If this happens, disaster is just around the corner, can't see he is the one, but if he doesn't mind being a patsy then I can see Levy's attraction.

I agree that Kane and son are both dreadful pressers at this stage in their careers but for different reasons.

Kane just rarely is willing to move anymore as he conserves energy for attacking. He’s an ok presser when he commits to it. He’s not quick but he’s at least smart about it and strong enough to win the ball.

Son is almost the opposite. He is willing to put in sprints but he’s pretty much a headless chicken when it comes to pressing. He will sprint half the pitch at the keeper only to get beat by a simple pass. And it’s just wasted energy.

We may be able to survive with one of them and then the rest of the team being organized pressers. But I doubt the remaining 8 field players can carry both of them.
Totally agree with you. Hopefully if it’s Ange he gets Sonny to be more clever with it. You don’t have to be fast to do it,it’s timing when to go and where to try get the opposition to take the ball.

He might move to Manchester?

If he does, Richarlison would be much more capable of closing down & pressing, wouldn't he? I reckon Kulu's got a bit of potential too - or he bloody well should have, at his age.

Levy has utterly destroyed Spurs in the last 2 years with his awful decision making.

I cannot see the wisdom of tapping up a manager from the Scottish prem- at least prove it in an actually competitive league.

We'll finish somewhere between 7th and 10th next year.

I'm honestly not sure I even want to watch next season.

Depressing stuff, truly.

Levy is such a prick he can't even bring himself to commit to supporting somebody like Nagelsmann.

It feels really weird we're not talking to Potter. Maybe even worse, he's not interested in talking to us...

God help us run ENIC and Levy out of this club.

Last thing I read about Potter is that Palace were getting ready to approach him.

I did say a few times last season that I couldn’t believe what Conte was doing wanting us to defend deeper and deeper and absorb pressure so much on the edge of our box and sometimes deeper with the defenders we have and their ability. Surely the best way to not concede, especially if you’ve shit defenders, is to keep the ball as far away from your own goal as possible. Whilst at the same time have as much of the ball as possible. Conte’s football really was fucking stupid.
