Annoying isn't it?

Our "totally risk averse" defense last season was Lloris, 3 from Dier, Sanchez, Romero and Davies with Royal at RWB and either Sess or Peresic at LWB

Our defensive unit, even when Romero played was like watching the 3 stooges most of the time. If Dier wasn't playing opposition attackers through on goal, we had Lloris throwing it in his own net or Sanchez getting booed off the pitch after the worst 20 minute cameo in PL history.

This season we've had a keeper that I believe made no errors leading to goal all season, 2 top quality CB's at the top of their game, and pretty useful FB's. And we still conceded almost as many goals. I would, on paper at least, expect the current unit to concede 15-20 goals less over a season than we did tbh.

We also had 4 FBs playing in a back 4 half the time and Royal having to play LB pretty often.

That’s before you ignore the excuse not taken of 3 of the back 5 playing their first prem season and Porro converting to a new position

Maybe the guy likes football🤷‍♂️

So Ange has to take 6 weeks off to reflect and relax?
He will have his holidays and take time off. And to be honest these guys won’t switch off. Tottenham will consume Ange’s thoughts whether he’s on a beach or doing punditry.

Why isn't he working on tactics with Mile and the crew #Angeout

It wasn't half the time, was it? Did we have 4 full backs when Fulham, Newcastle, Woolwich and Liverpool popped 14 goals in against us? We were near full strength then.

We were full strength until Maddsion, VDV and Bentancur had long-term injuries.

We had players available but that wasn't full strength.

Anyway, I'm not here to make excuses just pointing out that your excuse for last season was no more valid than any we could make this season when we conceded less despite playing much better and more attacking football.

I think we conceded as many as we did because we played wide open football with little regard for defense.
It's as simple as that. Park our players in the opposition half and we invite teams to play a quick ball behind and catch us out. Which they did. A lot. And then expose our inability to defend set plays.

So why did we concede more the season before when we parked everyone in front of the goal and never even tried to play football?

But then haven't you answered your own question?

In theory, and ignoring other factors, our defenders should be (and are) miles better players than those we had last year.

However if you look at the style of football we are playing now, we are taking a lot more risks, and consequenty scoring a lot more goals. If we played this style of football last year with the defenders that we had available then, we'd probably have conceded 20 more goals last season than we did this season.

For me that dynamic is perfect - we've changed from defensive to attacking football, which is what most fans wanted, but we've also improved our defenders massively, so now we can score more goals without conceding a lot more than we did last year (give or take).

Perhaps I'm missing your point. :/

EDIT: And btw, the previous poster mentioned our "totally risk averse, reactive bus park strategy" - not our "totally risk averse defense" (sic) which you then mentioned - the former is about strategy, the latter is a (perfectly valid) criticism of the personnel, but they are two very different things.

Yeah that's a possibility, but then why not grab a few Castlemaine XXXX's, throw a few shrimp on the barbie, and watch it from the comfort of his own home?

That's completely meaningless waffle, he'll be there to discuss the matches being shown, not Spurs, our profile will remain exactly as it was before, we're one of the top 10 clubs in the world in a number of metrics, and have been in European competition consistently enough that anyone with a passing interest in football knows who we are...

If any Woolwich or Liverpool biased pundits are on there, it'd be really weird for them to mention Spurs at all, and they'd just end up showing themselves up rather than having any impact at all on our football club.

If you genuinely think he's going on there to fight the good fight for little old Spurs, then you must be on some wild substances.

As it is, I'd ideally rather our manager was taking his time off in the summer as an opportunity to relax, reflect, and come back refreshed for the new season. I always find it strange when currently active managers and players pop up doing punditry, what is their need for it?

does stink of attention seeking. hes got serious work to do! shouldnt be wasting time waffling shit about comps that have nothing to do with spurs.

The guy can’t win. If some don’t like him they’ll find something to have moan about him.
The flipside is also true, there are people devoted to defending every single word uttered/action made, any criticism or questioning is dismissed as "you just don't like him".

Couldn't be further from the truth for me, I like him, I like the game he talks, I wan't him to succeed, but as the season went on and particularly the latter weeks, there's been a few instances where he's rubbed me the wrong way, and I'm very much on the fence with regards to his tactical "masterplan".

I guess this is no different to Son getting his kit off for Gucci or whoever in his spare time, it just seems out of the ordinary, as it's usually out of work managers taking on these roles.

One thing that I just noticed - we conceded just two goals less this season, compared to last season.

Despite... you know, getting in 2 new starters in defense + new and better goalkeeper.

I mean.. we upgraded from Dier to van de Ven and as a result only managed to concede 2 goals less?!?

Come on, however optimistic or pessimistic you are, this has to sound alarming? No?
Sorry but this is completely ignoring the context, in particular the style of football played last season and this season.

We are playing much more attacking football now, scoring more goals (well, getting in positions to score more goals at least!), and consequently giving up more / better chances to the opposition. However we've not conceded lots more goals than last year, as our defenders and keeper are much better players.

Isn't this what everyone wanted? More attacking football, more chances for us to score goals, but without conceding lots more goals? I'm certainly happy with that. :/
