Nicely done. Hate to see us always concede or to fall behind early, but two games in a row there's been a positive reaction in the second half from the team, and subs have been effective. Nothing much to complain about there.

No worries. I just saw a cheap opportunity to bash the stats nerds. You stats people can’t even agree on what the stats are.
There’s no hope for people who just watch football.
Leave me in the dark ages.
Nothing wrong with stats, as long as you view them in conjunction with what you see on the pitch. They only tell part of the story on their own.

Villa created 2 high quality chances in the first half, the corner and the chance that Watkins got as close to the corner flag as he did to the goal. They also had Ramsey's chance which deflected over. That's 3 opportunities which produce high xG. So, you could look at the value of the xG alone and think that Villa were unlucky, but if you look at them in the full game context, they were the only 3 chances of note that they created over the full 100+ minutes played.

Against a top 4 rival, you have to expect that they will create chances, anyone thinking that we would strangle every opportunity is living in cloud cuckoo land.

So yes, they created 3 good chances. One they scored, one they cocked up, and one we defended well.

On the other hand, we created 5-6 good to excellent chances, finishing 3 of them superbly, with the last (I think FK's have a low xG score) just beautifully taken.

This is where the stats can be somewhat misleading without the benefit of actually seeing the game. It wasn't an end to end lottery game, we controlled the game in the main. We might not have possessed the ball like we usually do, but we controlled the areas that Villa had possession in, cut their passing avenues, and forced them to make rushed passes that we were able to pick off. Two of our goals came from turnovers.

Incidentally, all 4 goals were beautifully worked goals, which seems to be a fairly regular occurrence of late. xG won't show that to you, which is why it should only be used as a part of the whole and not used to tell the whole story. We were comfortably the better team yesterday.

GW 1-5 = 1.4 ppg
GW 6-10 - 1.8 ppg

That's progress I guess.

GW 1-5 was against opposition on average, placed 11.4 in the table, GW 6-10 was 11.6 so slightly lower level opposition.
Next 5 as at today average 9th in the league, with 2 outside the top 10 and 3 inside, 2 of which are in the top 4.
Be very interesting to see then from the next 5 how we hold up.

let me guess? a city that couldnt care less or a united team that was the worst its been for god knows how long? you consider them good wins do you? numpty
When we win everybody is shit and when we lose we are shit? Maybe just maybe these teams are shit when they play us is because we make them shit.

You are exactly what’s wrong with our support. Enjoy the win for fuck sake. Imagine not being happy beating the best club team in the world and the team that’s top of the champions league! Strange way to support a football club!

Son could be 27 and in his prime. Kane could still be in here and banging them in. I don't give a shit.

It's Ange's job on the line.

If he tells Son he's not coming off until 75mins and during the match has a thought that changes that, then Son needs to suck it up!

I love Son but I'm sick of players getting away with shit while manager after manager gets endless grief and then the boot.

Son should have behaved. He knows there are cameras constantly on him in the stadium. He's supposed to be a leader.
There was really nothing wrong with Son's reaction. He was just starting to hit his straps in the game, and saw that Villa were there for the taking. In his place, I'd be gutted as well, and would likely have reacted in the same way.

He's an intelligent bloke though. He'll be over the disappointment and raring to go for the next match. In some ways, it's excellent reverse psychology. Son won't sulk, he'll be on the pitch against Ipswich thinking "try taking me off after this performance gaffer."

It was a smart substitution in more ways than one.

the squads better than being 1 point ahead of 10th and 9th over the last 38 games.

yea good win yesterday, first one for fucking ages. the last good win was villa on the 10th of march so lets not get carried away. we lost to crystal palace just over a week ago, gave them their only win in 10.
I’m not getting carried away far from it , my expectations are not that high . I just prefer the way we play now to the last 5 years. People pay a lot of money to watch the team , I would sooner win, draw or lose having a swing than be bored to death .

To each his or her own I guess , be dull in here if we all agreed

I think it proves these stats are largely bollocks. Other than the goal, the header against the post and the half chance Watkins dragged wide they didnt do anything. I dont think the 4-1 win was particulaly flattering. Not for me to tell people what enjoyment to get out of a game but being so driven by stats just takes all the joy and emotion out of football imo.

This is the bloke that invented xG.
Blame him!! Bloody nerd!!!

Bit like the missus dragging me away from a dinner party when I’m at absolute prime wittiest- we all know I’ll be back bigger and better, but it hurts the ego a bit at the time.

That Messi geezer has scored all these goals beating 3 or 4 sometimes 5 players , statistically passing it back to the centre half was the safer option , blokes a fucking chancer

EDIT : I bet Hoddle’s pass completion rate was in the 70-80% range , but he was always looking for the difference making pass. Give me a great player who takes risks over someone who is great at playing it safe

daveyboy88 and Matt1882 Matt1882 are absolute goalpost moving clowns - the type of fan who gives real fans a bad name. Always looking to be negative, taking no joy in any positives.

Fuck 'em. Anyone who chooses to be that miserable isn't worth the bother.

9 wins in 11 games, plenty of goals scored, entertaining football. I'll take that quite happily thank you very much.

Man United have lost 4 out of 10 and only managed 9 goals. If a team generally plays well until they lose to us, you'd have a very valid point. But they really have been shit all season. We put 4 past West Ham who lost 3-0 to Forest this weekend, and even they beat United.
There had never been a better time to play United than this season so far. They were on their knees whilst ETH was still in charge.

They showed the stat on MOTD that we are streets ahead of anyone for points gained from a losing position this calendar year. 24 points, with City in second on 14.

We used to do the same under peak Poch.

thats 1 good game dingo. only real decent game this year, no doubt you skippys would be on here celebrating the one decent result. 1 point ahead of 10th after 10 games.....

2 points off 4th. League is just very close this year.

End of December will be the time you can really judge how teams are doing.

The fact we have dropped so many points to weaker teams is probably going to bite us on the bum come May.
