I completely get what your saying but by losing 22 games its completely out of your hands whether you get relegated or not, you are literally opening the door to it waiting for someone else to take their chance, we got lucky.
I dont understand this notion that because it didn't feel like it, it wasnt an issue.
It's not a notion. At literally no time were we threatened with relegation. It's not a feeling, it's fact.
I do agree with your premise though, that losing 20+ games does leave you open to vagaries of luck, but...
We really don't know how the approach would have been in the league HAD we been genuinely threatened with the drop. Had we been closer, would VDV and Romero played more often? Would the demeanour of the players have been different if their actual league standing was threatened?
For all we know, had the points margin been a lot closer, they'd have prioritised the league and climbed out of trouble.
None of us knows how it would have panned out, we only know it didn't and we put the majority of our effort into the trophy run.
There's an awful lot of "could a, woulda, shoulda" in this thread, reliving the past in alternative scenarios when the facts are all there laid out for us to see.
Fact 1: We were never in danger of relegation.
Fact 2: We won the trophy we prioritised, ending a 40 year drought.
Fact 3: The league form was unacceptable, to a club of our stature, so he was sacked as a result.
Fact 4: Nothing improved under Frank, nothing. If anything it got worse.
Fact 5: Tudor. Absolute collapse.
We don't know if AP staying would have been better, worse or the same as it has been this season, so you're all arguing for the sake of arguing, thinking your fantasy is more realistic than the other bloke's fantasy, but it's all fantasy.
With all that's going on with the club, you'd think you lot would have something more important to focus on than arguing over fantasy scenarios.
