After everything, I’m in the camp that says it’s time for ENIC to move aside. Whatever achievements they’ve made it is clear, to me anyway, that there is no meaningful strategy or planning on the football side of the business and certainly no vision for the future from a fans perspective. There is plenty of detail and discussion about this on the ENIC thread, so no need to dwell on that here. However, leaving the above to one side — whether you agree with it or not — we have to look at Conte, now that he’s said he will decide his future in the summer.
If he believes that it’s not working here because he’s not been given funds promised or lied to by Levy, he’ll be off in the summer like a bullet. Alternatively, if he’s been told there’s likely to be new investment into the club and that he’ll be backed this month and in the summer with new signings (I know, I know — jam tomorrow), then again he’ll have a decision to make at the end of the season.
In the meantime, and this is what boils my piss, Conte needs to accept that this is the squad he’s got until he walks away or gets the players he wants — so work with it. Show us that you are the coach you claim to be. Accept that Son has been anonymous all season and coach him back to where he was or should be, or drop him. Understand that Lloris is making too many mistakes and make a decision. Accept that in Perisic, Doherty, Royal and Sessignon you haven’t got the quality wing backs that your system requires. On that basis, don’t keep playing a midfield two, in whatever combination of players, and see them run ragged every game because they are continually being outnumbered four to two. Put your stubbornness to one side and earn your money as a coach. If that means at least trying to play to whatever strengths some of the more limited players have, a tall order I know but so be it. If you have to change formations to add Bissouma and Sarr to the midfield, for example, to protect the defence and just use two up front, try it. Whatever it is you decide, you must realise that getting slaughtered for 45 minutes in the first half of every game and conceding goals every first half (bar last night where it was reversed ) and struggling in cup games against the likes of Forest and Portsmouth is piss poor. Coming out after every game and saying “it’s difficult “ isn’t cutting it.
In simple terms, I don’t doubt he’s a great coach if he has quality players across the whole squad. He’s gone down a level with us and until he walks, or gets the players he wants, he needs to understand that he can’t keep churning out the same formation every game, watch it fail against the better sides, moan about it with any number of excuses and simply rinse and repeat. The whole thing is a mess, but if it stays like this between now and the end of the season, he needs to go.
