Manager Antonio Conte

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I just signed up to the forum to say thanks for the laugh.
I'm hoping Conte gets enough of what he wants to stay on, the energy on the pitch since he started has been much better (apart from that nightmare in murska).

Conte after his Spurs tenure and dealings with Levy

Love this.

When Conte was at Chelsea he was easy to dislike.

Animated and obnoxious on the touch line (like Klopp), he’s the type of manager you love to hate.

Even w/o considering Conte’s incredible 5-3-0, 2.25 pts/PL match start, our worst to first (in distance covered by players under Nuno and Conte) is enough of a metric for me to feel excited about Conte’s approach.

I’m surprised how calm, measured, likable and humble he is when discussing the club, squad, his approach, etc.
Just wait until February 1st after he has been fucked by Levy and Paratici.

I still maintain that a 3-4-3/3-5-2 is inherently a more defensive set-up than a 4-2-3-1/4-3-3/4-4-2, but even Pochettino recognized when he needed to trot it out.
Poch went back 3 at home against minnows mostly, rather undermining your point.

His apparent view of it was that a back 3 made us more able to recover the ball higher up the pitch and allowed Walker and Rose to play higher and provide more width in the attack. It was kind of his go-to against opponents he expected to bunker in against us.

The Godfather has spoken.

My recollection is that Poch essentially went away from 3 CBs at the beginning of the 17/18 Premier League season, but would bring out 3 at-the-back occasionally for our Champions League 18/19 season (as deep as our semi-final 1st leg vs Ajax).

My point was that even Pochettino knew when to go more defensive.

Yeah, I noticed that on Match of the Day and it made me laugh - that sudden "oh fuck" double-take as if his mother is going to slap him afterwards for disrespecting the older Italian gentleman.
:contefacepalm:

Side note: that whole dugout is responsible for two years' worth of Spurs heartbreak when we were at our peak under Poch.
:pochcry:

Though water under the bridge and all that. Conté is our boy now and I love him.

I was thinking to myself about tactics and approach to the game that Conte has.
He obviously want our fullbacks to keep the game wide and then those just infield of them to be available for some short passing / triangles.

But if we consider Southampton and Watford game and our lack of clear cut chances...

Wouldn't it be possible to switch from essentially 5-2-2-1 to 5-1-2-2

What I mean is that our current first XI is -

--------------------Lloris-----------------
Royal-Sancehz-Dier-Davies-Reggie
----------Hjojberg-----Skipp-----------
---Moura----------------------Son------
------------------Kane--------------------

Now, let's be realistic here - Kane is not the player that makes many runs behind the defense. Though on the other hand we still occasionally use him as vocal point and try to play long ball to him so he would retain possession high up the field.

But what if in order to have better game control we would switch from that kind of setup to -

--------------------Lloris-----------------
Royal-Sancehz-Dier-Davies-Reggie
-------------------Skipp-------------------
-----Lo Celso----------------Winks------
--------------Kane----Son----------------

Of course I would like to propose that Ndombele would be this player to be brought on due to his ability to turn and make difficult passes happen etc. But in this system the two more advanced CM players would have massive importance in tracking back and fight with opposite team midfielders. So he ain't gonna trust Ndombele there. And Alli... well, his flicks and tries are so often off mark that I doubt we would be able to control the game like this.

Why I started to think of that solution is due to upcoming NLD. I really feel that this kind of system would help us to create more chances all over the field + to press their midfielders enough to smother their attacking movements.

It also provides somewhat more flexibility - if we would have a lead to protect, it would be so easy to take off Lo Celso/Winks for PEH. Or if we are chasing / trying to turn narrow deficit to win, we could first sub Lo Celso/Winks for Lucas and in the end maybe bring in Ndombele/Alli for last 20 minutes to make us more creative.

What do you guys think of such setup?

aka 343 vs 352

(What's with all the back 5 crap? This isn't Steve Bruce's Newcastle....)

....And the point being argued is that 3 CBs isn't inherently defensive as you claimed; it's HOW you approach the game tactically which determines how defensive you are, not the basic formation.
