How can you call the games that you need to play to qualify for the WC meaningless? Playing in the WC is meaningful, but playing to qualify for it is meaningless? Winning the WC is the pinnacle of any footballer's career, but to do that they need to qualify for it first. It's like saying a game in the 3rd and 4th qualifying round of the CL is a meaningless game.

:contefacepalm2:

Edit: don't get me wrong, I hate the international breaks too, but they're not meaningless. Going away to play a bunch of friendlies is meaningless.

There should be 2 tiers of qualifying. Everyone know's it. How can the small weak nations ever improve when their only experience is getting tonked every time they play?
What does it achieve? Who get's anything other than meaningless caps? Grandson, I played for England for 10 minutes against Andorra and we won the game 8-0
Yes grandad, I'm so proud of you. You must have been one of the greats.

They are world cup qualifiers and its as much an honour to play for your country as it is for our wonderful club i dont see the problem here fifa has designated certain dates for this its not like it is out of the blue
Just because you think that doesn't mean every one does. The quality of football is generally awful. England have been about as fun to watch as coastal erosion since the turn of the century.

This is his jam apparently:

So you're saying that a national team manager should just select 2nd tier players for the easy games? The problem is that there is no one international break with all easy games. You play Andorra and the next match is Germany. What will you do in that case? Call up two sets of players: one for the easy match and one for the hard one?

And if we do go to the 2 tiers of qualifying, then you will definitely be missing your star players every international break.

Your logic (if it can be called that) makes no sense whatsoever.

No, that's not what I meant.
I meant all the tiny teams that get their arses handed to them should all be put in their own group and qualify from that group before getting a chance to qualify for the actual world cup in a proper group.

In world cup qualifying Andorra have played 60 and won 4 and have an goal difference of -160
In Euro qualifying Andorra have played 60 and won 1 game. Their G in that is -155

San Marino WC - P 66 W0 GD -299
San Marino Euro P 76 W0 GD -332

Lietchtenstein WC - P 60 W2 GD -162
Liechtenstein Euro - P 68 W5 GD -186

These teams, and many more of them, should all be playing each other and no one else. I mean fuck, Spurs had to play a fucking qualifier to play in the 3rd tier Ropey Paint Trophy Non League Cup this year.

So you're advocating for smaller qualifying groups by weeding out the bottom feeder teams earlier, so fewer games as a result. Well, they could do that now, if they wanted, even with the San Marinos and Andorras. Have more groups and the team winning the group qualifies and no runner up playoffs.

You'd still have international breaks, though. And they would be equally meaningful. So I don't see how this addresses the "meaningless" moniker you have tagged these games with. If anything, they would be more meaningful.

Basically, if you're trying to make a point, you're using some really weird arguments.

But the games wouldn't be meaningless time wasters. You take 10-20 weak teams and let 2 qualifiy then put them in the big boy groups. You could lose Andrra and Albania from our group straight away.

In a time where all eyes are on the environment it's air miles we don't need to rack up. In a time where a potent virus won't go away, it's unnecessary travel. In a time where clubs pay players a lot of money, it increases risks of injuries that aren't really required.
