Gray is a mature player who's not a boy wonder but gives the impression that he listens, that he wants to learn. At 19 and with a season of mental football behind him, and another which hasn't taken off yet, he's getting good minutes, and you'd imagine this will contribute to him becoming an accomplished player.
The price tag element will have had people, myself included, thinking or hoping for more, and sooner but that's unreasonable. The sheer volume of players, especially in that position, who don't establish themselves until at least couple of years older is far greater than those who step in and make the position their own immediately, and if they do (thinking Wilshere) they get overplayed and end up on the scrapheap by mid-20's.
I'd still love to see Wharton join us, how realistic is up for debate, but I don't see a world in which Gray can't work alongside him and Bergvall/Sarr in a year or two. The biggest issue we have is that it's a position we're crying out for a certain player now, and Gray could be him by the age of 21 but he's not today.
I like him though and am pleased he's with us.
