ah yea fair point, he started at CB against the best team in europe, so weve lost 2 out of 9 with him starting, 1 out of 7 with him starting in his actual position.

actually excels at something? what do you think youre meant to be looking for? pirlo-esque passes, from a 19 year old? hes keeping things ticking over in the most important part of the pitch, thats exactly what a CM is meant to do. hes clean on the ball and has a good understanding of what to do with it, barely ever loses the ball, hes played a good ball to porro earlier which resulted in a pen and picked up a loose ball and drove forward to put odobert in with a clear cut chance....good job you mentioned the PSG game, he had a hand in two goals in that too....the kids 19 lol.

he was 17 in the championship...thats barely fresh out of school. hes still growing into his body at 19, his strength will go up rapidly over the next few years.

hes already our best footballing CM and it aint even close, he shits all over sarr, bentancur and palhinha when it comes to actually moving the ball about cleanly, and having the football brain to know how to use the ball as a midfielder.
Great engine too - bit like Rice, quicker than he looks and can run all day

Bentancur and Bergvall are both better.
Sarr and Pal are different types of players

The other two PL games were Burnley and Brentford, who were shite. He played at LB against Monaco when we were totally outplayed. CB against PSG and we conceded 5. 90 Against Doncaster.

I can't think of a single performance in midfield that he's looked like he actually excels at something. he's not particularly pressure resistant, he can pass, seems to be able to use both feet, but nothing exceptional, he can't really carry, he's not really a dominant ball winning - busy cunt 6 type. In the championship he barely got a game in midfield. And like some of our other youngsters, I don't think he should be playing first team football for a team with (delusional maybe) ambitions of at least finishing in European positions.

Get him out on loan, playing in midfield every week. If he turns out to be good, then fine, if not move him on.

I think you are a bit ott but closer to the truth ( atm ) than the crazy overrating going on.
It's Winks, Sarr, Carroll, Mason Hud and Bentalob - all over game.

Exactly the same arguments.

" but what are they actually good at " ?
" You don't notice it's not all about passing, shooting , dribbling and tackling "
Guess who turned out to be right?

Archie looks better than the above - it's a question of how much better.

Gray is a mature player who's not a boy wonder but gives the impression that he listens, that he wants to learn. At 19 and with a season of mental football behind him, and another which hasn't taken off yet, he's getting good minutes, and you'd imagine this will contribute to him becoming an accomplished player.

The price tag element will have had people, myself included, thinking or hoping for more, and sooner but that's unreasonable. The sheer volume of players, especially in that position, who don't establish themselves until at least couple of years older is far greater than those who step in and make the position their own immediately, and if they do (thinking Wilshere) they get overplayed and end up on the scrapheap by mid-20's.

I'd still love to see Wharton join us, how realistic is up for debate, but I don't see a world in which Gray can't work alongside him and Bergvall/Sarr in a year or two. The biggest issue we have is that it's a position we're crying out for a certain player now, and Gray could be him by the age of 21 but he's not today.

I like him though and am pleased he's with us.

Yes, but the sheer volume of players who fall short of the over-hyped hopes and comments when they are 17,18,19 is even greater.

Don't want to get to excited but this kid is better than Hoddle, Waddle, and Gazza rolled together*

At the age of 19 I mean. Obviously those guys were better that Archie when they were in their prime - but only slightly.

Archie is the real deal. Such a complete player. Its like having a new signing. I already think he's our best midfielder and could see him entering the Wharton/Anderson debate for England before the world cup. Thats how highly i rate him.

He’s a player.

I think he’s going to be one of those that splits the fan base because he won’t ever “wow” you but he just does all of the little things correct.

I echo the sentiment that he should continue getting minutes in our midfield.
I think he will end up a bit like Carrick, not that he is going to fuck off to United but just a class act , not a flashy player as such but the glue in the midfield, exciting times and I really hope we try and sign his younger brother as well who is meant to be the more exciting prospect of the 2!

Bergvall was at #10. And Bergvall creating a chance doesn’t make gray any worse
Simons was 10 - Bergval was 8 or 6.
You do have to wonder what the love for Gray will be - should he do something with the ball
Bo Derek.... Now SHE was a 10

I think the confusion lies because we had about 3 or 4 players ROTATING positions throughout the game...

Simons, Kudus, Richie, Muani & Bergwall (when they came on) all switched around, depending on what bit of the game you were concentrating on...

I don't think positional rigidity IS as black and white any more... Especially in the front third of the pitch...

It felt like Simons and Kudus were EVERYWHERE on the pitch at times last night!

I won’t forget, and don’t think anyone else should forget, the immense performances he put in, completely out of position, loads of positions other than his usual, last season. It could have been a very embarrassing time for him, not great at his age for confidence building, but he usually nailed it. A few blips along the way but in general I thought he was put in a horrible position to cover for the issues caused by both Ange and DL. Hes built up a lot of brownie points for me. And he’s done really well when I’ve seen him actually where he’s supposed to be.

Nurture this fella and I reckon we have a future club legend on our hands.

Two starts two wins- good enough for me to want to keep it going.
I love his tenacious work in midfield- he's willing to scrap mightily in order to keep possession and touch lost-cause 50/50 type balls successfully on to other players.
His size and physical stamina shouldn't be underestimated.

He’s definitely not a DM TBH
No, he's much more than that. We haven't even seen his shooting boots as nobody on our team has had both the wit and occasion to lay one off to him.

Consider this:

ST
LW - Xavi - RW
Gray - Bergvall
LB - CB - CB - RB
GK
That is some serious size and aggression in CM right there- easily enough to cover for Xavi.
I'm sure most will say they aren't old enough to be trusted as our CM pairing in the Prem, but, I say, why not give it a try? Surely we have to be looking at that as our future central midfield. Either way I'm loving the look of Frank apprenticing Gray and Bergvall alongside Palh/Benta. Good call by Frank (so far)...

weve lost 1 out of 8 with gray starting, that was against fulham where vicario threw the game away after 6 mins. one of them games he filled in at CB for a 0-0 draw in the CL, away to monaco. but yea, lets ship him off on loan and try and recoup some of the 40m we paid loooooool.
Eh

He has only started 7 games in total, and record in those is Won 4 (Burnley Doncaster Brentford Copenhagen) Drawn 1 (Monaco) Lost 2 (PSG Fulham)

That’s reasonable enough record without you having to make games up in your own head that didn’t happen to improve it.

yea youre right, i read the site wrong, he featured in two more draws as he was brought on as a sub, so his win % is even better.
