I'm a southerner and I always asked my mam "what's for tea!".For most Southerners (sensible people), tea time is mid afternoon when you drink tea and maybe have a bit of cake. There is also the ceremonial/celebration type of afternoon tea with a platter of sandwiches, cakes, pastries, sometimes alcohol.
For people from somewhere in the Midlands upwards tea is dinner, the evening meal. There is also something of a class divide in the naming of the evening meal.
