The mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, yesterday denied that the city council had broken rules on state aid in their land deals with Real Madrid, following The Independent’s reports that the European Commission was investigating contracts between the two parties.
Botella, who is the wife of former Spanish prime minister José Maria Aznar, read a prepared statement at a press conference in Madrid when she was questioned about the issue. She said that there had been “scrupulous respect for the law” when the two parties completed their deal in November 2011 and refused to comment further on the basis that it was the subject of the European Commission investigation.
The issue centres on the Las Tablas land that was part of a compensation deal agreed by Madrid city council with Real Madrid in 1998 and valued then at €421,000.
When it was taken back into the control of the council in 2011, the value placed on it was €22.7m, a 5,400 per cent increase, and in lieu of that sum Real were given two tracts of land around their Bernabeu stadium crucial for development of a shopping mall and hotel.
The Spanish newspaper El Pais said yesterday that sources in the city council suspected that English clubs were behind the complaint to the EC which alerted competitions officials to the potential state aid issue.
El Pais estimated that Real had allegedly benefited by as much as €200m from the deal because while the land they received in the exchange with the council was equal in size, it was worth a greater amount.

The Spanish football club Real Madrid sells its training ground to the city council for €480m to wipe out a €290m debt. Under the agreement, the football club will relocate to a new training complex on the outskirts of the city by 2004. The council plans to construct four huge office blocks on the site of the current training ground, as well as a new 20,000-capacity sports pavilion for the city’s 2012 Olympic bid. Real president Florentino Perez says the deal will lift a major burden that has been hanging over the club. “I have been working for this from the very day I became president,” says Perez. “This is very important for Real Madrid because we have removed a terrible burden and will soon have a new training ground which will be even better than AC Milan’s Milanello training complex. From now on we can live without anxiety or financial difficulties. Real Madrid has not only to be a sporting leader, it must also be a financial leader too.”[BREAKINGNEWS(.IE), 5/8/2001] Real will use the proceeds of the sale to buy top players such as Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo, Ronaldo, and David Beckham, but the transaction will be investigated by the EU (see March 3, 2004). However, Real will not be forced to repay any of the money (see (November 9, 2004)).

that was actually astonishing. I new about the Madrid land deal in 2001.
I didn't know that they got another 200 million worth of land from the council in 2011. so thats 470 million in cash, plus 200 million in land, in less than 10 years.

from the state. In a country that has empty half built towns, cos the money ran out.
