The Fighting Cock
The atmosphere at White Hart Lane has been a hot topic since AVB’s post Hull City comments. Since that Sunday evening, WHL has played host to two 1882 events and brought the movement and its ethos into the spotlight. However, mystery still surrounds the movement with some new to the premise confused and unaware of what it stands for. We are all Spurs fans, and therefore regardless of whether a person is affiliated with 1882 or not they deserve a voice. This […]

Is this the only problem there is; ruining other peoples' experience? Well that is easy and why it is in 35.
Also I felt slightly highbrow when he said sitting in silence does not make you a worse fan. To me it kinda of does sorry .

The article raises some good points - and while I'm fervently pro-1882 there will be some 'teething problems', and then other problems, and then some more, just like in growing up as indiviadual :)

However, I want to pick up this idea of 'two dark decades without the prospect of a trophy'

The last time we went two decades without a trophy, let alone the 'prospect of one' was the 1930s and 40s, dark decades indeed for many reasons, but surely not what the author is referring to?

Because hardly any of the current STs he's referring to were going to games then.

I suspect he's referring to the 90s and noughties. In which case, if he has forgotten so quickly, we won two trophies in the 90s and one in the noughties. We also reached several other semi-finals, so far from the 'prospect of no trophies' we had a very real prospect of at least 5 trophies, maybe as many as 7, and we realized our aim on 3 occasions.

If you want to talk about 'dark trophyless' decades, well we're currently suffering one, again a fact that seems at odds with the writer's analysis of where we are today compared to where we were.

The author's views on this are worth noting and correcting, because they represent an oft held myth, that it's fantastic today compared to how terrible it was twenty years. But at least most who peddle that incorrect view (IMHO) don't make the mistake of forgetting our last three trophies.

Also this 'appalling football, substandard players,' compared to what we get today. We're talking Lineker , Gascoigne, Ginola Klinsmann, Berbatov, Keane, King, Bale, Modric amongst others who played in those decades. Was beating Reading 6-4 so much worse than beating Hull 1-0? Was beating Woolwich and Chelsea 5-1 so much worse than drawing with Chelsea 1-1 and losing to Woolwich 1-0. Of course there are many counter examples, but did the writer actively follow us during those two 'dark decades'? There are a lot of people (not me BTW) who preferred the Jol years to the AVB years so far.

Oh and I agree with Raiders' point, sitting in silence does make you a worse fan, and those who mainly are vocal in criticising our players, are far worse than that. To me they're not even fans/supporters, they're just people who pay money to hinder our team.

I saw a few families walk out. Whilst we know it’s a raucoussing-song, it doesn’t look that way when you’re three feet tall submerged in ticker tape

Well they wanna man up a bit!
I can't remember the last time a bit of ripped up newspaper hurt anyone at a football match!
Do they want the sanitised, SKY SPORTS version of modern football.... Or the actual reality???

Oh, and by the way, I sat through that two decades of mediocrity, and I'M STILL HERE!
Glad that we've even got a club to cheer for (after the early '90s debacle!)

Guess what people.... There ARE actually still some 40+ aged fans that are still prepared to sing for the shirt, rather than boo and moan about the old days, and lament the passing of Alfie Conn and Colin Lee!!!!
We're not ALL that cunt!

I can sympathise with a lot of the points made but, with better communication, these problems shouldn't persist for long.

- singing "you used to sing down there" - while funny, I can see why people may take offence to this
- kids and families - we have a whole stand dedicated to this - the club marking 1882 stands as "may contain loud singing, pogoing and the removal of footwear" should suffice in this regard
- people coming to the game for a nice quiet time - welcome to the West Stand.

Football isn't theatre or the movies. The crowd form an integral part of the experience and if you don't want that aspect of the experience then that's fine - but the implication the author makes is that it is up to fans to be quiet because others may want to enjoy the game in silence, rather than it being up to that fan to excuse themselves and steer clear of 1882 and other raucous groups.

FINALLY, the author makes mention of hard, uninspiring football at away grounds a hairs-breadth from demolition. All I'd like to ask is,"Was this support in silence? Was it pindrop, exam-hall, concentration-levels-reaching-critical quiet? Or was it loud, and noisy, and exuberant and did it not sound like delight or despair, as we felt with our team?"

I wasn't there. I'm the first to admit that. But god damn it I want to be when supporting my club makes me feel like I'm one of many with a single voice, rather than one of many groaning and moaning that this or that Spanish international is too shit to wear the shirt.

The article raises some very good points, and it is a shame some families do walk out, they should yes be better informed by the club

I appreciate everything the 1882 movement is trying to do, I was in J block when Danny Rose scored, 1882 before 1882 was cool that day, when the atmosphere was electric, to relive those times would be amazing

I have a suspicion most people on here dont have any problem with fans being quiet, enjoying game their own way and celebrating goals, what I have a problem with are the ones who stand up, moaning and shouting at our own players like real neanderthols, thinking negatvity will suddenly make Kyle Naughton Maldini overnight

Just like we should look at West Ham and Chelsea for their racism before our chants, we should try and eliminate the negativity before we blame the people supporting their team in a way that is encouraged throughout the world.

He offers some good arguments from the other side. Some of you guys would do well not to flippantly disregard the opinion. There's an opportunity to make this work how it was meant to, instead of alienating the majority, which is not the intention ofcourse.

Iv been to a couple of 1882 games without being directly involved, mostly receieved well by the fans around me, very few of them knowing what the motivation is. They won't be the ones who speak out though. Always the same.

Will be interesting to see how this goes now it seems to have a larger stage and audience.

Like 1882 I am an 'older' fan. I did the Notts Counties and Mansfields and other northern hell holes away.
I am massively in favour of the 'movement' and what it is trying to do.
Whoah there Grandad.... You've STILL got a few years on me!!!!!
But other than that.... WHAT HE SAID!

(it goes without saying, you know I was joking!)
See you at the bingo tomorrow night.... and the World War II reunion next week!!!!

I guess singing isn't a pre-requisite... but if you turn up to a match expecting everyone ELSE to generate an atmosphere, without contributing yourself, then you can't go home disappointed when the crowd is shit, and the team didn't seem to respond very well to the groans and boos emanating from those who feel they have a right to be entertained by a winning team, without adding anything to the atmosphere themselves!
