The Son/Solanke Maddison/Bergval subs made very little sense, surely it should have been Werner and Sarr off? He then tactical corrects that sub 10 minutes later with the Kulu/Werner sub, pushing Son out left and having Kulu as the F9. Such a convoluted way of doing things.

And it was Maddison pressing with Bentancur that set up Johnson, who finished really smartly.

Can't say we saw much of it last season either.

It could just be that it's just too counter-instinctual for the modern wide fwd... They've all been coached for the last 10-15 years to cut in and provide goals. Would explain why our attack has never really clicked since he arrived.

I really don’t think they are verging on the majority. It’s just that it’s a limited number of people posting the same comments endlessly. It is tedious in the extreme. It hasn’t helped that results have not gone our way since the new season started, despite the fact that we have generally played well. Tonight was the opposite. We were awful but got a great result.

I do think we are going to click sooner or later and, if we do, the loud minority will slip quietly away. COYS

Seem him do similar a bunch of times.......... 1st sub(s) leaves us shapeless and confused; 2nd sub(s) puts us back into OG shape.

It's quite a Southgate thing to do.

I kinda wonder if Spence hadn't finished whether we'd have got a pen....... Defender just went straight through the back of him.

As little as I know about football, only having started watching when I retired here in the US, I've always been struck by how you can sense when a team is about to score. Once someone beats their man 1 v 1 and a defender comes to help you've disarranged the back line and things open up. I understand what Postecoglou is trying to achieve, but what I haven't seen yet is Spurs attack in the final third get teams on the back foot. I don't think he will give up his system, but obviously there is still work to do because the attack isn't moving the opposition's players out of position.

I want to win a cup this season. End of. I don’t care about the league position, I want a pot because its been scandalous that we havent won one for years. Thats not melting. Winning even the League Cup would help take the pressure off Ange, give the players some belief and we could use it as a springboard.
Do you agree with that?? I’m sure you do. So we put our trust in Ange to achieve that…..and then after our poor start in the league he starts that team tonight and we were ridiculously close to going out. We didn’t deserve to win tonight, they showed more quality and were better drilled despite us having superior players. Do you agree with that?
So many of us on here aren’t melting, we just can’t be fooled by these late, late goals saving the day. We didn’t want to lose tonight but we cannot be excited and dancing around becos It papers over an abject performance, it papers over him risking going out in one of the cups that we have some chance of winning because he wants to show how ballsy or true to his beliefs he is. Bollocks to that Ange. Stop being so arrogant, unless the team is putting in performances that justify it AND CONCENTRATE ON GETTING THE TEAM TO WIN SOMETHING THIS YEAR. Not in 3 years time.

He has to do something with his “system”.
Teams and their managers know that if they keep their shape and allow us possession we invariably do very little with it. It’s tedious watching side to side, backwards & trying to walk it into the net when we get into the final third of the pitch. We look laborious most of the time and the tippy tappy football slows it all down, giving the oppo too much time to set up against it. Play it quickly and don’t be afraid to take the chance on.
I’m a big fan of counter attacking football done properly.
But we’re playing high press/high line and it simply has to be done better because teams will continue to counter attack in the knowledge that we will cough up at least one gilt edged chance

I agree with you about counter attacking. When it is done well it is one of the most exciting aspects of the game. We've got Son, who is really great at stretching the pitch, but this system takes away a big positive part of his game. And Johnson, for his faults, has so much pace we don't see often enough.
