Here's our match peformances in the sequence the matches were played. Average match rating is 6.30. As you can see we've been below average for a few games now. Wigan game is still open for votes.

Update - 25.11.12

With 18 games played (excluding Carlisle (A) which did not get any ratings) Walker remains the only player to have played every single game with Lennon close behind. With November being a poor month for most involved, if we ignore Falque who only got 2 rated games under his belt, Dembele remains top in the average ratings followed by Sandro, Vertonghen and Lloris.

Average deviation remains high for Defoe who either excels or frustrates, joining him in this venture is Adebayor and with both being our only recognised strikers we can only hope those don't both mis-fire at the same time. Dempsey and Gallas are also inconsistent with Dempsey being either bad or terrible. With such a small sample Dawson and Assou-Ekotto remain the most consistent however with a larger sample Dembele and Caulker lead the way on consistency, and not the bad kind.

November has seen two sub-4 performances from Adebayor and Dempsey and one 4.00 performance again from Dempsey. It has however also seen three high scores in Bale and Defoe against Maribor (8.50 and 8.70 respectively) as well as 8.32 from Lloris vs Lazio. Walker, Defoe and Dempsey stand out in sub-5.5 performances whilst Vertonghen still leads the way in over-7.5 performances with 4, Sandro and Bale likely to catch up sooner rather than later with 3 each.

Dempsey is winning the race by a long way in terms of worst performance in a match with 5, whilst Vertonghen and Sandro are fighting it out for the most MOTM awards.

Panathinaikos (H) 3-1

Our fourth win in a row brings our lowest average rating of 6.50 for a game won by a two goal margin since the 6.84 vs Aston Villa back in early October. The lowest rating for this game was 6.18 and the highest was 6.86, which shows that this match didn't excite many. The number of votes from TFC was abysmal with just 3 however suggestions are that as this was an 1882 event most of them were too blind drunk to recall much of the game Also as a request from Mr. Green on GG I've decided to include the whoscored.com ratings from here on. These ratings will not impact the average rating of the forums but are simply posted for further comparison and discussion.

Our MOTM for this game was Clint Dempsey who got his third over-7 rating in 4 matches and his first over-7.5 rating of the season with 7.53 bringing him his first MOTM award of the season. Playing in his favoured position coming in from the left in this match, the only thing missing was a goal, which he was unlucky not to get when he hit the woodwork. Another player back in form after a horrible start to the season is Kyle Walker with his third over-7 rating in a row with 7.03. It's good to see that our regularly worst players this season have flipped the table around. Also it's good to see Adebayor back putting in a decent display to compare vs Lazio (A) and is amongst the goals without getting sent off this time!

Worst player of the match by far was Kyle Naughton with 4.56, playing again in his less favoured left-back role. This is the second time this season and second in the Europa league at home where Naughton has been the worst player, as was the case vs Maribor at home. This is also his third sub-5.5 rating of the season but not his worst performance of the season, that was against Woolwich (A) when he got 4.41. The only other player with a disappointing score was Brad Friedel with 5.89, back in the side for this game after being dropped for the last 5 games in favour of Hugo Lloris.

So what does the whoscored.com rating tell us with its statistical algorithms? Our ratings were pretty similar with Dempsey, Sandro, Caulker and Carroll whilst Vertonghen and Friedel were rated about half a point more. Kyle Walker was their MOTM with a whole point more than what we gave him probably due to the 4 key passes in the game, a high successful pass rate and plenty of touches. Defoe and Adebayor got higher ratings, probably due to their goals however the two players that stand out in difference are Aaron Lennon with 1.2 points more, likely due to an assist in the game and Kyle Naughton with a whopping 2.43 rating higher with 6.99 (oddly enough his rating in the previous match vs Fulham away). Naughton did have the most amount of touches in the game and his pass success was a decent 86% however it seems to me the stats don't actually look at play. Thoughts?

A look back at November

A busy month and a mixed bag of results with 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats. Three straight defeats in the league saw our two worst performances of the season vs Wigan (H) with 5.36 and Woolwich (A) with 5.37, however the month ended on a high with two straight home wins including our best performance of the season vs West Ham (H) with 7.39. Our remaining two games were in the Europa league with a win and a draw, leaving us in a position where qualification is in our hands with at least a draw at home to Panathinaikos next month.

The month game average was 6.17, slightly below the season average of 6.30 with 3 games above the season average, and 4 games below. We also saw 11 goals scored and 10 conceded, annoyingly half of those conceded were against that lot up the road.

Our player of the month was a tigher affair, with consideration only taken for players who played at least 3 games. Coming out on top was Sandro who played in all but the Maribor (H) game with MOTM performances vs Man City (A) and Woolwich (A). Only 0.05 points away from him were Gareth Bale, who played in all the games, and Hugo Lloris with 5 games, having seemingly now taken over the number one shirt. Gareth scored 3 goals in November and got his first MOTM award of the season vs Liverpool (H) whilst Hugo's excellent displays vs Lazio (A), where he won his first MOTM award of the season (with the third highest rating of the season of 8.32) and West Ham (H) helped his average score after poor performances vs Maribor (H) and Woolwich (A). Bale also received three over-7.5 ratings, more than anyone else in November along with the second highest rating of the season with 8.50.

A special mention should also go to Defoe who got a hat-trick vs Maribor (H) and the highest rating of the season with 8.70 as well as 2 goals vs West Ham (H) getting MOTM in both games. Regardless of this his November average rating of 6.15 was still just under the month's average. This was mostly due to his three sub-5.5 performances, notably his 4.61 vs Wigan (H) and 4.94 vs Woolwich (A). As a result of these good and bad performances Defoe's standard deviation of 1.74 reflects his inconsistency. To compare, Caulker and Dawson had consistent months with low standard deviations and with both their average ratings above the team average.

Another inconsistent performer however was Adebayor whose standard deviation of 1.73 was mostly due to his sending off vs Woolwich (A) which resulted in the season's worst score of 3.30, as well as his half hearted performances vs Lazio (A) with 4.84 and Wigan (H) with 5.44. Complete opposite performances to compare vs Man City (A) with 7.31 and Maribor (H) with 7.37.

One of our worst players of the month however was Clint Dempsey, although not getting the lowest average rating of the month, he played in all but one of the games in November and received ratings of 4.58, 4.92, 3.63 and 4.00 in four of his six games and was the worst player on the pitch in three of them. His better peformances vs West Ham (H) and Liverpool (H) however resulted in the higher standard deviation of 1.41 and saved him from getting the lowest average. The worst player, although it must be said with only three games and two of those as a substitute was Gylfi Sigurdsson, with all three being sub-5.5 performances. The low standard deviation of 0.22 he got also indicates he was equally as bad in all three games. Two other players who had a bad month were William Gallas and Kyle Naughton with average ratings not much higher than Dempsey.

Everton (A) 2-1

Something bizarre came out of this game, I'm not talking about conceding two goals in the 90th minute to lose it and allowing Everton to leapfrog us into 4th, no, I'm talking about the voting. Sure, it's been known for GG to give higher ratings to a game, normally not by much but for TFC to get more votes in? Not since the first game of the season has this happened! After the embarassment of only getting 3 votes in for the Panathinaikos (H) game TFC can hold it's head up high once more. Oh and a warm welcome to all the new voters, many more than in previous weeks.

Anyway, enough crap. To the ratings.

A first defeat since the abomination that was Woolwich (A) three weeks ago however with a season average game rating of 6.23, very similar to the 6.26 when we lost to Norwich (A) in the League Cup. Lowest score given was 5.18 and highest was 6.82.

May as well start with the negatives. Our strike force was shit, Defoe anonymous, Adebayor even worse apparently. Caulker gets his lowest rating of the season with 5.80 (previously 5.82 vs Lazio away), for being at fault for one of the goals, and noone was capable of putting in an over-7.5 rating in this match, in fact only two players managed an over-7. Defoe joins Dempsey with the most sub-5.5 performances in a season with 7, which makes that a third of his games. Adebayor's fifth sub-5.5 of the season (in 11 games no less) earns him his second worst player of the match award for the season. Looking at the standard deviation, Gallas and Huddlestone split opinion in this game.

Positives? Dembele's third MOTM award of the season, amazingly all 3 have now not been over-7.5 performances. Walker, Dempsey and Sigurdsson continue to maintain decent form, or at least above season average form for them. Any other positives? Well, Woolwich lost to League Two Bradford in the League Cup this mid-week so that's made the week that much better plus we've had a mid-week break which should hopefully help freshen things up for the match vs Swansea at home, who they themselves had a mid-week League Cup tie.

Swansea (H) 1-0
Back from holiday and catching up with these. I've decided to keep the comments to a minimum and dropped the previous match rating difference and replaced it with a season average rating instead. Season average rating is as of 1st Jan 2013. Incredible amount of votes for this game, surpassing the previous high of 34 vs Fulham (A).

Vertonghen's goal gives him his fifth MOTM award of the season and now tops the leaderboard in MOTM performances by himself. Defoe worst player on the pitch.

Reading (H) 3-1

Our third win in a row and the double over Reading with the same scoreline as the game back in mid-September. Similar rating also with 6.97 this time round compared to 7.02 last time.

Lennon's second MOTM award in a row and breaks his highest score of 8.32, which he only got in the previous match, with a 8.50 this time round, and this time without even scoring a goal - however providing an assist for Adebayor. Sandro also gets his eighth over 7.5 of the season and leads Gareth Bale by one on the leaderboard now with Bale having been suspended for this match.

Defoe joins Adebayor and Dempsey with five worst player of the match performances although his is in his 26th match of the season to compare with Dempsey (20) and Adebayor (16).

Mid-season ratings so far. Dembele, Sandro, Lloris, Bale and Vertonghen fighting it out for player of the season. Great to see three new signings doing so well.

Walker, Huddlestone, Sigurdsson, Dempsey and Adebayor must do better in the second half of the season, shame that three of those are new signings! Dempsey, Sigurdsson and Walker already showing improvement thankfully.

Gallas must surely be in his last season for us.

I think Defoe's stats cover what you are saying, his MOTM awards were both when he scored 2 against Reading and 3 against Maribor yet he's also been the worst player on the pitch twice and had more sub-5.5 performances than over 7.5s and his average rating reflects that he's below the average of 6.12.

Out of 27 votes in that game only 2 people put him in their top 3 and only 1 person put him in their top two... I think we'll leave it to differing opinions.

West Ham (H) 3-1

With victory comes our best game rating of the season with 7.35, beating the previous high of 7.23 away to Man Utd. One of the main reasons for the high rating is the excellent team performance throughout the whole team, with the lowest rating going to Tom Huddlestone with a respectable 6.72, his second highest rating of the season after the 6.91 which he got against Maribor at home.

With his brace Defoe wins MOTM with a rating of 8.00, closely followed by the other goal scorer Bale with 7.88 and Lloris, who once again performed extremely well, with 7.86. A special mention should also go out to Clint Dempsey who not only got his highest rating of the season with 7.42, eclipsing his previous highest of 6.80 he got away to Man Utd, but also for the first time in 13 games got a rating which was above the team average. 13th time lucky for the American.

Further positives include Michael Dawson getting his highest rating of the season in his 5th game with 7.36, much better than his previous high against Maribor at home which was a 6.85, and Kyle Walker who with a 7.08 finally broke the over-7 barrier at the 19th time of asking by beating his previous high of 6.77 vs Reading away. The home game vs West Brom however still remains the only time he has gotten a rating above the team average so has still more to give.

No negatives really to report on, Lloris the only player getting a lower rating from his previous match, but that's to be expected with the incredible performance he put in against Lazio. As a side note this is one of the few times TFC has given lower ratings than GG! With Bale MOTM for TFC and Lennon the worst player for GG.

Our third win in a row and biggest victory of the season brings in a game rating of 7.01, with the highest rating given to this game being 8.15 and the lowest 6.15. This large difference is especially noticeable between who was MOTM for the game, with GG giving it to Defoe with his 2 goals and TFC giving it to the beast known as Sandro. Overall Defoe wins it as the 0.98 average rating lower GG gave Sandro ensured this. Interestingly Dembele's difference in rating between forums is also quite high suggesting that TFC considered the centre of midfield as an important factor in winning this game.

This is Defoe's fourth MOTM award of the season, joining Vertonghen at the top of the leader board and Sandro's second goal for the club means his 7.67 rating is his fifth over-7.5 of the season, joining Bale at the top of that leader board. One more positive includes Sigurdsson finally breaking the 7 barrier with 7.11, his highest rating of the season since his 6.59 all the way back vs Reading (A) in the fourth game of the season. With Dempsey also maintaining good form this may be the turning point for both players to finally show their worth consistently.

With noone performing particularly badly Dawson is the unfortunate worst player of the game with an acceptable 6.32. As he was stretchered off early in the first half his ratings reflect the poor performance of the half. Two other players however were rated slightly worse than Dawson over at TFC in Bale and Gallas with Bale especially not having a lucky game, getting booked for a dive that wasn't and getting injured by pulling his hamstring when shooting at goal between the first and second goals.

Vertonghen gets his second MOTM award in a row bringing his total to six. Also his sixth over 7.5 of the season, joining Sandro at the top of the leaderboard.

Defoe and Adebayor share worst player of the game, Defoe's fourth of the season and now only one behind Dempsey.

Aston Villa (A) 0-4

Biggest win of the season and third highest rating with 7.21 after wins against West Ham (H) 3-1 (7.35) and Man Utd (A) 2-3 (7.23). Bale's hat-trick earns him a 9.43, eclipsing Defoe's 8.70 for his hat-trick against Maribor (H) and his own 8.50 in the same game for the highest rating of the season. This is also Bale's sixth over 7.5 rating of the season bringing him joint top on the leaderboard with Sandro and Vertonghen.

Adebayor's 6.07 earns him worst player of the match for the second game in a row bringing him up to four for the season alongside Defoe and one behind Dempsey.

Second away win in a row with Lennon MOTM with his highest rating of the season of 8.32, beating his previous high of 7.83 vs Chelsea (H) when we lost 2-4. This is also his first MOTM performance since that game back in October and third of the season overall.

Adebayor's third worst player of the match in a row sees him join Dempsey with five in a season and in only 15 games to compare with Dempsey's 19.

I agree. However Walker, Gallas and Dempsey got such low rating in the Chelsea game it dropped the overall score. Maribor and Panathinaikos everyone was mostly below average but noone stood out or what utter tripe.

Interesting stuff, but I never fall for the average ratings argument. Ratings go up inexplicably if the ball crosses the line even by an inch.

Likewise Defoe could be innocuous all game but score two goals and pick up a huge match rating. That said there's an argument that scoring goals deserves to be rated highly as it changes the game.

I dunno, ignore me. I would delete what I just wrote but that would mean I would have completely wasted the last 60 seconds, so fuck you. Fuck your time as well.
