Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Imagine if Johnson had made a mistake costing us two points yesterday. The thread would be radioactive.

Fans online are truly ridiculous
What a stupid comparison. Yes, Romero made a mistake. But he’s been our best defender for 2 years, is first choice for his nation and won the fucking World Cup. Johnson has done nothing approaching that.

You are right though fans online are truly ridiculous.

Making my first post in 10 months just to laugh at how ridiculous our fans are. Spurs fans are truly one of a kind. Thriving in our misery so they can tell everyone how they were wrong because a great player makes a single mistake. Fuck me, I can't imagine how miserable life would have to get to just hate everything and everyone associated with the club.

Does that explain the difference in reactions to the first game of the season? Obviously one player is better than the other but just concentrate on yesterdays game.

Romero made a HUGE mistake which cost us points and has received little criticism. Johnson played a below average game and has been murdered.

Romero made a mistake but otherwise had a good game. All of our offensive players ex perhaps Madders were guilty of not scoring / creating enough clear scoring chances

In the blame game , Johnson and Son much more to blame for two dropped points than Romero

Seems like Romero gets alot of love/pass even though he makes some egregious mistake and received too many suspensions due to cards throughout his Spurs career.

I still remember that Chelsea game, where he had to miss 3 games which changed the outlook of our season...

23/24 = 3 game suspension due to red card
22/23 = 9 game missed because card suspension.
21/22 = 14 games missed because card suspension.

26 games suspension in 3 years of EPL football...

I have no doubt he is a good player, but sometimes he looks out of it. He doesn't play like he plays with Argentina.

Where the fuck did you get those numbers from?

I'm not one of his most ardent fanboys, I don't think he's the hotdog defender some do, certainly not in the box, but according to this (Cristian Romero - Suspensions & absences) he's missed 2 games inn 21-22, 0 in 22-23 and 3 in 23-24.

9 & 14 is blatantly nonsense.

That TFM summary looks a bit fucked too.......

"Suspension through sports court"?..... Other question marks..... EDIT: They're international bans anyway.

EPL 23/24 - 7 single Y / 0 double Y / 1 R > 3 matches ( 2 for straight red / 1 for accumulation of 5 )
EPL 22/23 - 9 single Y / 1 double Y / 0 R > 2 matches ( 1 for double yellow / 1 for accumulation of 5 )
EPL 21/22 - 8 single Y / 0 double Y / 0 R > 1 matches ( 1 for accumulation of 5 )

His disciplinary 'problems' are MASSIVELY over-stated.

(He also got a double yellow in our last CL match so he should miss our first EL tie as a result.)

You've nailed the problem, he's been our best defender in a team leaking goals all over the show. And he's caused plenty of them.

I think he's a good centerhalf but not a great one. I don't care what Messi thinks, I was and remain baffled by Spurs fans who had him ahead of Toby Jan and hillarously King. I agree with the bloke who said but for the shortness of tenure he's level with Gough. I think he is a classic case of recency bias. But I'm adamant that Romero VDV Udogie Porro Sarr Bissouma are ALL good enough to mount an assault on the EPL title. I think they are to a man being made to look considerably worse footballers by a system that exposes them in a frankly insane way. I think a change in system and three class players we would cook.

in what ways is the system exposing them? I’d genuinely like to hear your thoughts on this

That back five has conceded just 10 goals from open play when on the pitch together...

And tbh, I don't think the majority of those goals were a case of being exposed within a system.

Mate myriad ways, I've been honest for some time about my doubts about 'Angeball' . Fullbacks underlapping both making us too narrow, a sitting orthodox DM instead of his hybrid 8's protecting Romero and Mickey. VDV repeatedly asked to win last man duals not being good for him learning to play elite left centerbacks in a two, as with Udogie in the next state he's not learning distances to the leftback...loads more about Biss....BUT! I'm on holiday at the beach and genuinely can't be bothered. Too nice a day for essays.

Which fits with me saying they are good enough to mount an assault on the title. Not in this system though. As for your ten goals them stats out of context are very cherry picked.

How is it out of context?

All it tells us is that the depth behind our back four last season was troublesome and cost us big time. When we had to start Emerson and Davies at centre back for three games for example. We conceded 12 goals... In three games...

At any point that back four was on the pitch together and it wasn't disrupted through injury or suspensions, we lost one game. (Newcastle away) and conceded 17 goals in total (with 10 coming from open play)

That's not cherry picking, that's a fact. That back five for the most part is excellently in tune with what the system asks of them and are pretty good at dealing with trouble in open play (hopefully set pieces too this season)

Hopefully Spence and Dragusin help bridge the gap between first team and depth and we also get another left back in before the window shuts.

It also shows that if our offence could do their job, we wouldn't have to rely on the defence to do theirs as much.
