Whilst I agree that Pleat’s time has almost certainly come and gone, as scouting advances towards data, this does seem an acutely insensitive way to deal with someone who has done a lot of good for the club.

Seat for life? Not sure on that one.

Room to launch his book? I’m sure that shouldn’t have been a problem.
Im sure even after identifying players using the data approach the eye test is still needed? Pleat would have been ideal to look at players who the club have identified. I’m sure he knows more about players and their football abilities than any of Lange , Munn and co! Most who have probably never played football.

You’d hope we also conduct the eye test aye. But whilst Pleat’s football knowledge isn’t in question, is he the correct guy to do this? I don’t know. Club seemed to think not.

I’m more confident we are identifying the correct players now than I have been for a good while.
That being confidence based on.

Gray. Who was 100% Brentford bound before it became an optimistic punt from Spurs after the deal collapsed.

Solanke. Who was West Ham bound until the wages were not enough and whom data driven Spurs then 😎 waited two and a bit months to swoop for. And those two and a bit months were the longest possible period where no additional data would be available ?

I guess Bergvall is fair enough, but so far his 31 minutes of football are making it slightly hard to judge the value of that next generation black box that is pulsing away in the centre of the Tottenham universe.

You can no doubt sense I am a cynic.

A huge amount of hindsight and a dollop of belief I suppose.

Hoping we don’t have another n’ signing. Hoping we don’t drop the ball like we did on Tanguy and GLC.

Although I do agree that if we really wanted Solanke, why didn’t we sign him on day one of the window? And I also think we had the money to strengthen the goalkeeper and left back positions too, but that’s less about player identification and more a question of where the money is.

But the three you have mentioned do strengthen us now and gives us a strong future too. Hopefully.

Fucking thing clearly needs a software up date...

Disgusted Steve Carell GIF

The club has been after Werner since he was a kid breaking through at Stuttgart. Poch was manager back then and there was little of this data driven bullshit. The club just bided their time until they had the opportunity to bring him here.

Nasty post.

Bring back the Disagree!
People talk about his scouting and the success of Dele, but what about Blondel? What about Clarke? What about Dier?

Even with Dele, did he assess the mentality? Why does Poch get shit for convincing Levy to sign Ndombele without assessing his mentality but what about Pleat and Dele? Does he get a free ride because he’s an old git and has history?

Pleat was a decent scout but had at best a 50/50 hit rate. Paratici eye has been way better.

He was a consultant scout, mainly lower leagues. He wasnt over every deal. Ndombele was all about our French league 'expert' Steve Hitchen and Poch. I'd also say Eric Dier, whether Pleat or not, was an excellent signing. £5m for 9 years service and easy to forget the first 2 or 3 seasons he was really good. It was on Pleats watch we signed Defoe and had the Robinson deal lined up and Arnesen followed his scouting reports to sign Carrick, Lennon and Dawson. Like anyone else he wasnt perfect and there were some misses like Doherty and Etherington didnt live up to the hype.

He also claims Vertonghen so not just lower leagues, right? I’m not saying he wasn’t a good scout. He brought some successful players but people forget the rubbish he brought also. I still think for an “eyes and ears scout” Paratici has better.

Also arrested 3 times for kerb crawling? He claimed each time he was looking for his daughter who was a druggie and selling her body. If that’s true then clearly that is tough as a parent. But it always seemed pretty a convenient excuse. What would you do after the first time being arrested (and you are being paid in the top 99.8% of the country)?

I quite like Paratici and he did some decent stuff but dubious he was better. Gil, Royal, Richarlison, Forster, Spence, Perisic, Gollini, Lenglet.

I said mainly lower leagues , no idea on Vertonghen. All i know is Pleat along with Arnesen, who followed his scouting reports, were the ones responsible for our revival of sorts In 2004/2005

As for the arrests i have no idea on that information but i've always been dubious about the timings. Scholar wanted Venables as manager and he was sacked by Barcelona late September. A couple of weeks later all these stories come out. A month after that Venables is appointed. Maybe there is truth in it in which case he obviously had to go, you cant have the manager of Tottenham or anyone kerb crawling. The club dont seem that bothered about it though, since then he has been appointed DoF, been caretaker manager 3 times and then came back again as scout in 2010.
