Management David Pleat Podcast

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I quite like Paratici and he did some decent stuff but dubious he was better. Gil, Royal, Richarlison, Forster, Spence, Perisic, Gollini, Lenglet.

I said mainly lower leagues , no idea on Vertonghen. All i know is Pleat along with Arnesen, who followed his scouting reports, were the ones responsible for our revival of sorts In 2004/2005

As for the arrests i have no idea on that information but i've always been dubious about the timings. Scholar wanted Venables as manager and he was sacked by Barcelona late September. A couple of weeks later all these stories come out. A month after that Venables is appointed. Maybe there is truth in it in which case he obviously had to go, you cant have the manager of Tottenham or anyone kerb crawling. The club dont seem that bothered about it though, since then he has been appointed DoF, been caretaker manager 3 times and then came back again as scout in 2010.
Fair one. My understanding is he was arrested 3 times but never convicted. So he has no criminal convictions for kerb crawling. But everyone knew he did it.

It was probably pleat and venables who gave us the “spursy” tag. Going from a kerb crawler who the police had interest in to a Financial Crime guru.

Nice but it shouldn’t take shaming the club for the club to behave properly. If it wasn’t for Pleat saying something in public about his treatment I doubt anything would have been done.
Maybe this was always the plan. The two things mentioned are supporting the book launch and being hosted tomorrow.

The complaints were we weren’t selling the book in the shop or giving him a seat for life.

Different things.

But yes, it does look like a backpedal.

He was a consultant scout, mainly lower leagues. He wasnt over every deal. Ndombele was all about our French league 'expert' Steve Hitchen and Poch. I'd also say Eric Dier, whether Pleat or not, was an excellent signing. £5m for 9 years service and easy to forget the first 2 or 3 seasons he was really good. It was on Pleats watch we signed Defoe and had the Robinson deal lined up and Arnesen followed his scouting reports to sign Carrick, Lennon and Dawson. Like anyone else he wasnt perfect and there were some misses like Doherty and Etherington didnt live up to the hype.
Whilst he was Director of Football (not just a scout) we signed Christian Gross and George Graham as manager. Players wise
- Sherwood
- Freund
- Leonhardsen
- Korsten
- Doherty
- Etherington
- Rebrov
- Thatcher
- Dean Richards
- Bunjevcevic
- Ricketts
- Blondel
- Postiga
- Zamora

A load of rubbish to go with the occasional diamond

Everyone remembers that Covid snatch on taxes by Levy - he reneged quickly there in embarrassment (without thinking through his actions). Vile little bastard

Confused Stephen Colbert GIF by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Is there a diamond in that list? Dean Richards might have been if it wasn't for his health issues ...

Just an interesting window into the decision making process, “It was Jose who decided he was too expensive”.

I think many managers will have a sense of what is 'value for money' and that they need to help to get the most out of the money available to spend - it might not be same window but we brought in Carlos Vinicius on loan from Benfica (probably Mourhino's choice from Portugal) which Mourhino might have thought was a better deal (younger player, big upside potential etc) who wasn't a success at Spurs but later played for PSV, Fulham and now at Galatasaray so not quite Spurs level but not a bad player.

Timing wise, I think this was 2020 just post covid when everyone was skint, so value for money may have been higher up the agenda, and by making the choices Jose did he hoped to get a better squad - I think its the window we re-signed Bale and got Reguilon who Jose liked.

Ollie Watkins was signed by Smith at Villa who had managed him at Brentford too, and went to Villa for first team football - so were we also nervous about our ability to share minutes around between Watkins, Kane, Son et al ? Easy to make it just one major reason, but there's often multiple other reasons why acquisitions don't happen in addition to price

Sure I get all this.

It’s just completely the opposite narrative that dominates our transfer business though. Because when it’s decisions about actual spending, the managers are NEVER associated with this specific aspect.

It's a deeply cherry picked list..let's not mention Dele. There's a few others on his watch. Also my point was some one with an Ulrika Johnson avatar shouldn't rush to judge the morality of other humans. It's fucking odd....

My post opened with “Whilst he was DoF” so I took the ones when it was his ultimate say. Dele was not at that time. Pleat was a scout for Dele so gave a recommendation rather than a “let’s do it”

My list was the rubbish whilst he was DoF - his decisions. I also qualified my post with “occasional diamonds” during that period whom I didn’t list. In my opinion, for every decent signing there were 4 or 5 poor ones. It was not a good hit rate in my opinion.

People try and re-write history to make Pleat a hero. But in my eyes, he never was.
