A bit like most of our big signings, we clearly overpaid. He's just a mid-table striker who had a hot season.
He's not shit - he's had good games for us and is a competent enough player. But he's inconsistent and lacking in that real top-level quality. If we played a system like Bournemouth's that got the absolute best out of him, maybe he's worth the money, but he's clearly a guy that needs the system to suit him to flourish at all.
We've done this a lot over the years - paying premium for "proven PL quality" but choosing the wrong guys. Solanke, Richarlison, Kudus, Johnson, Gallagher, Sissoko...that's pushing 300m quid and averaging almost 50m per player.
They're all mid-table guys. And when we've gone big abroad for players like Lo Celso, Ndombele and Xavi we've also managed to get it wrong.
This is the main reason we're in this mess. Poor squad building and financial mismanagement. The squad has been poorly assembled and we've spent way too much money on average players for a squad that doesn't make sense.
