England squad

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Think everyone following England would be ecstatic if we had a pool of 40 genuine candidates for the squad.

ATM I think its more like a stretch to see 30, but I'm really hopeful that there are players born around year 2000 who might step up - just depends as always on playing opportunities, but the 'raw talent' appears to be there

Good point, here's who I think are sniffing around getting a place in a 25 man squad based on Southgates call ups and players i think are showing good form:

Pickford
Bettinelli
Butland
McCarthy

Maguire
Tarkowski
Stones
Gomez
Alexander-Arnold
Trippier
Walker
Rose
Shaw
Sessegnon

Delph
Dier
Henderson
Loftus-Cheek
Barkley
Chalobah
Winks
Mount
Foden
W Hughes

Dele
Lallana
Lingard
Sterling
Maddison
Sancho

Kane
Rashford
Sturridge
Welbeck

34 players sniffing around the England squad and I'm certain I've missed a couple out.

On a side note I really do think Grealish needs to be looking as Mount getting a call up and snap out of his flash Harry ways. Run around, want the ball, get the ball give it, go go looking again, make shit happen. I've also been quitely impressed with the kid Rice at West Ham recently. I think he could make a good defensive midfielder long term so we'll see how he progresses but his versatility will be keeping Southgate intrigued im certain.

Are there any others that have slipped my mind when putting this list together? I'm sure there are one or two that have slipped my mind

I'm sure that there are a few who could be added such as Oxlade-Chamberlain (long term injury) and Calum Wilson for example (and even Theo Walcott is looking better at Everton than at Woolwich) plus Michael Keane and Alfie Mawson who both looked decent CB options a year ago but seem to fallen away a little since then,

But there's a couple on your list who I think are premature such as Chalobah who has only a few minutes PL football this season so I'm really surprised Southgate picked him, and Foden who I agree looks a great prospect but at the moment I don't think should be considered for the full England squad, although I agree he might deserve to be there either later this season or next depending on how much he plays for ManCity. Equally I'm a little surprised at Mason Mount being there as he looks 'ok' at Championship Derby and in the Dutch league (no longer a top league sadly) last season, so again probably one for the future.

So overall with both pluses and minuses I think about 30 players are in serious contention for the squad, but it can easily be stretched to 40 but the quality drops off IMO.

Agreed. I personally wouldn't be considering Mount or Chalobah at present but with them getting call ups you simply have to include others such as Foden as the spectrum has clearly been stretched by Southgate due to their call ups. Good shout regarding Oxlade-Chamberlain, he'll definitely be hovering in and around Southgates plans.

Realistically with Southgates choices today the pool is around 35 strong. It should be based on quality lower but the inclusions of Chalobah etc stretches it out to 35 with the potential to rise to 40ish should prospects kick on and develop. Hughes, Grealish, Rice can all do something with their talents to ensure Southgate is calling them to keep them warm for future calls. If they don't see that there's a gap with the call ups made today then they are fools. They need to be catching the eye more than ever now

Good to see but I still get concerned that we are good because of physical qualities at that level not technical qualities. I'd like to see more Fodens come through I think that's the future of football we need to see more of.

The quality is improving but I want to see genuine footballing brains develop. Players that are three steps ahead up top will always overcome big bruisers with pace to burn or players built like brick shithouses. I don't see many who know how to win a free kick out of nothing, I see a lot of the same kind of player but it's a very good step in the right direction. We just need a few less Roy of the Rovers and a few more that know about passing, moving, creating space for others, timing etc

Today's u21 squad. Most notable change from last squad is that Phil Foden, Reiss Nelson and Harvey Barnes are included for the first time.

I'm still surprised Lewis Cook hasn't been 'bumped up' to the full squad, Chilwell in the u21's again is probably because England already have Rose and Shaw at LB

Spurs represented again by Kyle Walker-Peters and Joshua Onomah

TJ Eyoma (CB/RB) the only Spurs interest in the squad. Surprised Japhet Tanganga isn't included in either u20's or u19's as he has regularly been in England squads and was one of a relative few who did not pull out of E u19 squad in the summer which overlapped with clubs pre-seasons - and a number of players withdrew to play with their clubs.

Whilst I'd love for us to pull our players - I can't help but feel the more game time the likes of Winks and Rose get the better they'll be for us.

Could do with Kane getting another rest though.

Agree with that - but I still think it would be better to 'ration' Winks and Rose to 90 minutes (ie one game), rather than 2 games (and probably the same for Kane) as we have a lot of games coming up later this month and November which will really test Spurs squad depth

Will mean nothing unless they play regular PL football.

That's been the biggest barrier to youth development in England for years.

It was true at one time that youth coaching in England as poor and many of the youngsters technical skills were poor, leading to many coaches buying ready made players from outside UK whose technical skills were far higher than in England.

In the last 10 years or so, the standard of coaching in English academies has become far better, and so has the quality of academy graduates coming through (as Low was saying) to the extent that Ryan Mason who was one of the best players coming through the academy maybe 10 years ago, now would not come through with those technical skills. The next barrier to be broken is coaches giving youngsters playing time in PL - and where they are not more will follow Jaden Sancho's example and go to a top overseas club for playing time. And I can see a PL club in a few years time having to fork out £60m or so (and ManCity got only £1m or so) , which might serve as an other wakeup call to PL clubs to develop some of their own youngsters.

And that includes Spurs who have lost a few youngsters over the last 4 or 5 seasons, perhaps the best known being Milos Veljkovic who appeared for Serbia in WC on the back of appearances for his new club (Spurs got £600k for his sale, now worth say £30m+) - his leaving was all to do with lack of playing opportunities.

Spursidol Spursidol Do you think we will lose KWP to another club whether that's here or abroad?

Won the world cup, yet has hardly had a look in.

I think its a big risk unless he has a few games this season.

He made his debut in the opening game of 2015/16 getting MoTM (and really should have made his debut the season before as he was more than ready). Got a couple of games last season, but should have started many more.

So how long can he stay at this level without playing - to put it into context he's probably played more England u21 games in the last 3 seasons than for Spurs. Crazy

Tarkowski withdraws through injury.

Lewis Dunk called up in his place - a bit left field ? He's 28 (possibly the oldest in the squad) and not played for any of the more junior England sides, but I guess Southgate wants to look at a lot of players, which is probably good.

Maybe surprised he didn't call up Alfie Mawson or even Tarkowsk''s Burnley cb partner Mee.

He's younger than Mee by 3 years.

I can assume Mawson is injured as he hasn't featured in about 3 weeks for Fulham. It's a nice moment for Dunk. Don't think he'll get a cap but Southgate shows he is happy to call anybody up from Brighton players, to Burnley players, to those playing in the Championship.

He could have just caved and called up Cahill for example.

In the main, I agree and good to see Southgate picking many of those names. However, Rashford and Welbeck do not deserve their selection. Rashford is right now beyond shit, he needs to drop a level and build some confidence, he's done nothing for close to two seasons now.

Whilst I don't think he's particularly any good, I think for the first time in years I can see why Welbeck would have been called up. At least he seems to be scoring goals.

Why Wilson is not being picked is odd.
