To all the players feeling bad about Ange losing his job - You should! Have a good long hard look in the mirror. Your last 6 months of PL performances were what lost Ange his job ... Dec 1st until end of May (working backwards)

Brighton (h) LOST 1-4
Palace (h) LOST 0-2

West Ham (a) DREW 1-1
Liverpool (a) LOST 5-1
Forest (h) LOST 1-2
Wolves (a) LOST 4-2

Southampton (h) WON 3-1
Chelsea (a) LOST 1-0
Fulham(h) LOST 0-2

B’mouth (h) DREW 2-2
Man C (h) LOST 0-1
Ipswich (a) WON 1-4
Man U (h) WON 1-0
Brentford (a) WON 0-2

Leicester (h) LOST 1-2
Everton (a) LOST 3-2
Woolwich (a) LOST 2-1
Newcastle (h) LOST 2-1
Forest (a) LOST 1-0
Liverpool (h) LOST 3-6

Southampton (a) WON 0-5
Chelsea (h) LOST 3-4
Bournemouth (a) LOST 1-0

Fulham (h) DREW 1-1

When you consider that 3 of those 5 wins were against Southampton and Ipswich are two of the worst ever PL teams, who lost 54 games between them this season (finishing on 12 and 22 points respectively) it really ain't great.

Any thoughts on why?

Arnesen ran off to Chelsea, and really set the theme where it seemed like we wanted a "Monchi" would could find the next generation of talent, but most of them, including Comolli, seemed to have some delusion that they were coming to us to buy Ronaldinho.
I think the biggest issue was the success of managers like Rednapp and Poch, who between them covered nearly 10 years of management - obviously with a gap inbetween - and didn't want that model. Poch especially seemed to want Mitchell to work for him, rather than the other way around.

People will criticise us going for someone like Frank, but I think our biggest mistakes in any recruitment is hiring someone who thinks they are better than us. I feel like Paratici is the first 'sporting director' type guy who genuinely wants to be here and loves the challenge.

Paratici and Frank, both high energy positive vibes

Big plus getting those ancient drainers Cullen and Collecot off the exec board too

From his ascension to the chairmanship until the hiring of Paratici, Levy insisted on a level personal control over the recruitment operation that made a total mockery of anyone else having a "director of football" title, and which by the late 2010's was a laughable disgrace of a dinosaur operation, a decade behind the operational sophistication of any peer club not named United or Chelsea.

There have been improvements since then, starting with hiring Paratici who was allowed a never-before-seen degree of independence. It does seem like Levy has seen the light that the operation can't be under the personal control of a layperson chairman anymore in the modern game. But his role is definitely still too large and prominent in the organization.

It will always be difficult for someone with a public profile as large as his, and who has been synonymous with the day-to-day operation for so long not to always loom in the decision making. He ought to formally step down as chairman, but I ain't holding my breath for that.

For me the recruitment by the club has been appalling for years , Directors of Football , Managers and an awful lot of players.
I don't believe that we are hiring staff (with the odd exception) who believe that they are better than us,
We are just hiring the wrong people, time after time after time.

You would think that the club would have put a strategy in place to overcome the issues that have arisen now, but we lurch from one mess to another.

Munn and Ange are the latest in a line of wrong appointments. It was two years ago that we were waiting for Munn to be released by Man City and was heralded as the man that was going to sort everything out with Lange and keep Levy away from the football side of the club.

We are a mess and it is no surprise that there is boardroom infighting.
Eventually someone has to be held accountable other than the incumbent manager.

But the recruiting (by every fan's request) is ultimately through the manager. David Webb confirmed that the manager always had the choice. We know that because Poch lusted openly after some awful players. When we did sign players outside of the manager's myopic judgement, we'd have the likes of Conte refusing to play them (Spence, Danjuma?)

I think the issue is that I feel that Harry Redknapp was the only manager who was good at that stuff. He ultimately always thought he was better than us, and Poch did too. Both of them ultimately in a self-destructive way.

I feel like our recruitment, player-wise, has been a lot better under Lange.

I don't think either of them thought that

He’s signed some young talent, but has shown no signs, much like Paratici, of knowing how to put together a balanced side. You need silk, steel, youth, a bit of experience, goal scorers. Our squad is just not like that at all.

I think the style of the manager didn't help, as that's typically what they scout for.

Trying to find wing backs that suit that style, and a striker that suits not being given the ball... did well to find CBs who can recover from a high line 300 times per game, but obvious not with hamstrings made of titanium

In the final 24 games of the season the only teams we beat, who were above us in the end, were United (below at the time of the game) and Brentford.

It’s absolutely insane how bad the league season was.

The squad was an absolute fucking disgrace, it was never up to the required standard to compete in cups and league. And a big chuck of blame goes on those who don’t invest correctly, It’s probably to Ange’s credit that he didn’t moan more, especially after what the utter clowns gave him in January.

I do have sympathy for Ange going after a cup win, but the league was dreadful…

I am not sure I feel as sorry for these players who are now in morning. They had contributed greatly to the worst league season any of us will ever have seen or will ever see. That said they also won the cup. Two thoughts at the same time….

Conclusion is, If they had scraped 10th, Ange would likely have stayed. But 17th and 22 defeats. You cannot have that.

It’s all such a mind fuck, and if it ends with Thomas Frank, I shudder at what we have become…

Moyes / Dyche / Pulis all similar to Frank. I don’t know how he would be progressive at all. Brentford are not a benchmark for continued success. They are a benchmark for stability and low investment = decent returns. I guess that’s what we have become

Utd 1990 - Fergie won first trophy after season-long struggle with bad form, injuries and fans demanding he be sacked… Utd finished 13th in the league having been 16th until last game. What happened when the board backed Fergie instead of sacking him?
