He was never a centre back. He did a job there next to Jan and Toby but was always a midfielder filling in a gap.
Ange has shown he knows more about footballers and talent in a few weeks than Mourinho and Conte did in 3 years.
They both figured Dier out eventually, but fuck me it took some time. All the praise and gushing about him, almost definitely to try to encourage a tune out of him. Didn't work, eventually they both used him less and less.
Ange sussed him out from one game that he's an utter fraud of a defender who has no business in a team that wants to win.
Let's not forget that Conte flat out refused to use Bissouma last season and this season he looks the best MF in the entire league. The guy may be a winner, but he wouldn't know talent if it slapped him in the face. So the concept that because he and Mourinho said nice words about Dier is utterly meaningless.

I agree with that. He missed a trick not focussing more on CDM. TBH, "peak" Dier as CDM for Everton or Southampton would be a good fit. He's ok on the ball/at passing. Not as good as Romero or VDV, but ok.

When Poch first moved him into the CDM role he was performing pretty well in breaking up play. His performances were being lauded and resulted in England call ups.
Yep and his problem now is that he's lost agility since then and is behind PEH for that kind of role. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes on in MF if we get injuries.
