IT WAS A GREAT MOVE BY NUNO TO HAVE HIM PLAY ON THE LEFT!!!!

It meant that Son could occupy Thiago (36yrs old), Nuno used his personnel available to him well.....

Playing high with aggressive pressure from Kane, Son Lo Celso, Dele and Ndombele. In addition to this he used Romero well (again to his strengths as we've heard about him in Italy playing very much on the front foot, which also stopped Chavs build up.

He got service, but his role wasn't to fucking score goals, why because he was playing on the fucking left! Why was he playing on the left because he can't press, but he kept high, received the ball with his back to goal and was playing in both Dele and Ndombele who were taking up some great positions. This caused Chavs MASSIVE problems. It took them until the approx 40th min for Tuchel to figure out a solution, which was to drop Mount into midfield, it worked so he double-downed with that solution and brought on Kante who's far better than Mount in that position.

Look at the above. Kane can't do what Son is doing here, Same as Lo Celso (or at least he can't do this AND remain alive after a successful pressing phase should we win the ball back!!! THIS IS WHY HE WAS PLAYING ON THE LEFT!

We went 1v1 with their backline and more interestingly we did this to their verticle spin. Silva (pressed by Son), Jorginho (pressed by Dele), Lukaku (Marked by Dier). (Lo Celso went 1v1 on Kovacic, PEH with Havertz & Mount - Havertz was able to play a couple of times around PEH in the first half, but on the whole, we contained them and interrupted their build-up).

Why was this so important? Because it showed Nuno used the right profile of player to execute this Dele/Son/Ndombele & Lo Celso are all better suited (their profile) to defending proactively rather than reactively (PRESSING).

THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF NDOMBELE PRESSING KOVACIC & WINNING THE BALL (DELE DID THE SAME TO JORGINHO)

LOOK AT THE WIDTH OF DELE, AZPILICUETA HAS TO COVER HIM CREATING A BIG SPACE THAT LO CELSO IS AIMING FOR WITH KANE DELIBERATELY DELAYING HIS RUN FOR A PULLBACK (NICE TO SEE REGGIE SO BRAVELY COMMITTED TO THE ATTACK TOO).

Kane can no longer press but is still a world-class player, so this is how you accommodate him. It absolutely worked in the first half (or up to the point when Tuchel dropped Mount into midfield at the end of the first half). It goes tits up because Lo Celso still isn't fit enough (no pre-season and then been away with Argentina). It goes tits up because Chavs react well to it and are a fucking brilliant team. It goes tits up because maybe Ndombele is still not fit (he's played one game, last week in almost 5 months!! but he didn't look shagged to me, there will be others on here who think he did. It went tits up because when Ndombele & Lo Celso went off we have no one to progress the ball, combine this with Chavs now having an extra man in midfield and they can now dominant it. (I think the idea was to try and take the lead in the first half, then probably sit in a low or midblock and hope to keep them out and look to counter????).

ALL THIS IS WHY KANE WAS PLAYING ON THE LEFT. BECAUSE WE CHOSE TO PRESS HIGH UP THE PITCH.

This team is a work in progress but you have Kane on the pitch because he's a fucking good footballer, ignore the media noise around him, christ there a ton of it now but if this is the beginnings of what we will seeing us develop into then I'm all in (I'm 100% NOT onboard if we don't and play like passive cowards). But Kane is really, really important part of this team as we can't do this without him.........

Great fucking post. People have fucking blinders on when it comes to Kane’s limitations as a player.

I can promise you if Son has Lucas and Berg, our press and counter would have been better, faster and more dynamic. Just see how we dismantled Man City.

Son was handicapped with Kane against Chelsea as far as pressing goes but i do agree that Kane needs a role, just not in his typical position.

Having Ndombele in MF was absolutely crucial as well.

The first half of that game we looked excellent against an elite Chelsea side. Could have been better with the likes of Lucas and Berg who press and counter much better

Kane is still very important in our build up as shown in the clip, the options we have of players comfortable on the ball whilst being pressed are very limited (Ndombele, Lo Celso, Dele & Kane) others like Son can offer a different solution with their runs etc but on the ball it's basically those I've mentioned (not including PEH as I'm not convinced with his passing but he at least doesn't hide and creates angles to receive the ball just question his actual quality.

It's a complete guess but I think were Berg and Lucas available (assuming they were on the bench) then they would have come on for Ndombele and Lo Celso. The game would still have not followed the path of the first half but I think we would have set up to counter, have Kane drop central and deep (Lucas has been good at dropping deeper to then carry the ball this season too) and then have Son, Berg, Lucas all run beyond him (which we've all seen before). It also meant that we would have simply bypassed midfield which looses all ability to keep the ball when Ndombele goes off.

Who cares if Lucas can ‘press’…. He can’t score goals and it doesn’t look like Bergwijn will either. We need to keep some goal threat in the side

Maybe it’s a 4-2-4 that’s needed with all four of them and Skipp and Ndom in a pair

Guido's analysis is sound. Nuno got the first half perfectly. What happen sadly is we had to adjust when the Chavs rumbled it. I think he should have taken Locelso off earlier for Gill switched Son and Kane and here's the risky bit taken off Hoijberge who with a fraction of the fuss than N'dombele dose tend to tire a bit too(probably because he works so hard) his lack of dynamism means when he dips he becomes way easier to play round. Id like PEH to really share mins with Skipp. He will get burned out like last season if we don't. Id recall Sarr in Jan and offer them Winks....😏

Lucas or Bergwin in for Dele, who also can't score goals but also doesn't press as well as these two.

Lucas and Berg also create chances by running at people with the ball, which Dele can't seem to be able to do anymore.

Not disagreeing much, but as much as we played a good first half Chelsea also created 2 situations where they really should have scored, we created one, and completely gassed ourselves out in doing so. Step in the right direction though, hope we take the game to Woolwich in a similar fashion.

Hahaha. 8 paragraphs about tactics in a game we got fucked in when we couldn't get our best striker a shot on goal because he was too fucking far away from the penalty area playing out left with these awesome tactics.

He needs to be more central, nearer the fucking goals.

Not sure I get your point about PEH..... But I'd have def. re-jigged after the first goal, if not at HT.

PEH / Skipp / Ndombele
Son / Kane / Gil

.....Gives their WBs something to think about and thickens us up in the middle to counter the Kante effect.

Another great post

I think not having Lucas / Berg left us with little to no options to adjust in the second half

Son was absolutely not fit and done by their second half so Lucas/Berg's counter threat would have been huge for us particularly with the way Chelsea were going at us

I also agree with your point on Kane - I've even argued for him playing in a #10 type of role as he'll be important in our ball retention and build up etc.

That was against v.high quality oppo tho'.... Against a lesser team - i.e. Gooners - I can see it having a lot more success.... Even if as a tactic it can't be sustained for 90mins.

Silva had a seriously good game (particularly in the 1st half). Ergo we posed a significant threat beyond what the stats have shown.

I wouldn't be against trying the same this weekend; just being more switched-on to the inevitable need for subs.

Hopefully we'll have Lucas and Berg fit

These two really go underappreciated because they're not clinical in front of the goal but they offer a lot

Teams are supposed to get better results with a truly world class player, not regress as a team.

Our results are worse with Kane, than without. It’s clear as day.

Bet you're still sick as a dog that he was our top scorer last season and also got the most assists. Better than Son, and Ndombele, well, the less said about his last season the better.

They offer almost as little as Ndombele. I want my forwards to score and/or assist, not just run around a lot. No wonder we're crap and are where we are when supporters like you are satisfied with such average players.

Kane had a wonder season last season him in a no 10 is not ideal though, he plays similiar to lukaku hold up the ball get others in the game then heads toward goal he is way more versatile yes but that is his strengths. Noobody wants to give him the ball right outside the 18yard box in traffic i dont understand it even when he is marked eriksen and dele use to give him the ball and move into the spaces in and around the box thats basically non existent Tanguy did it couple times and son got a shot off it they are not overloading the sides either to create space.

It is funny when you look at our rivals and the kind of wide players they possess and the numbers they put up (whilst also tracking back and offering energy, look at Mane & Salah) and then we're calling two absolute donkeys who put up single digit numbers between them 'underappreciated' just because they run about a bit.

They're attacking players, not water carriers. If Kane or Son don't score, nobody does in this team. It's actually pathetic how little goal threat our so called 'supporting cast' provide.
