Completely agree. 150 million is not realistic for a 28 year old.

Only United might be dumb enough.

I thought that. If City do get Haaland the pressure to keep up would be intense on United not to fall behind, then the stupid bids might come in at the 150-200m range out of sheer desperation.

If anyone went and got Mbappe in the Prem that might also get PSG going for Kane. I think to get a stupid bid high enough for Kane you would need movement on the other top strikers.

There is some truth to this but I once again push back on the American-style "rebuilding" concept.

There's no well of future draft assets we could stockpile. We could just hang on to the money I guess, but that's probably not viable for a number of reasons.

We'd surely get younger, which we should do regardless, but if that squad slips to mid-table (or worse), there is no draft or cap space coming to save us.

Agreed, but I also think that when we would be looking at what a rebuild looks like, it wouldn't be that severe albeit a little painful.

Firstly, you'd theoretically have the funds of Son and Kane to invest directly back into the team. Also, we have some promising players coming up in the youth system, but they will still need continued development and support to see if they can meet their full potential. Lastly, I don't know if we are really starting from square one on this either. You'd still have a team that has players ready to make a bigger impact (Rodon, Tanganga), players that could potentially reach a higher level of performance with the right system and coach (a Dele revival, Bergwijn), and a core of more proven or possibly very good players that can continue to improve and thrive (Hojbjerg, LoCelso, Alderweireld, Ndombele, Lloris).

It won’t bring the price down though. Not a chance will Levy sell Kane for much less than £150m

This is why it could get a bit unpleasant. The natural point at which Kane's valuation by Spurs and what a club like City will offer comes closer together next year, when he has two years left. That's why most observers thought next year he was far more likely to leave, this year the gap is too big between what a club will pay and what we will demand. To force through a move he's really going to have to create a lot if problems for the club, and if he isn't prepared to to do that, then why even go as far as leaking to Sky Sports he wants to leave. He's ended up pissing off people whilst probably having to stay another year. I don't think he's being well advised.

I honestly don’t see how anyone who follows football seriously can be this naive.

Sorry but it’s like believing in Father Christmas.

(He doesn’t exist btw).

It's the players that are naive.
The long term contracts suit the club and agents more than the players, unless they are ageing and wouldn't expect to find a pay rise elsewhere for the last couple of years of it - or a player that is simply not as good as the contract they are getting. Like Ndombele signing a 5 year contract worth £52 million.

Keep the rest of your 'funny guy' guff to yourself though. There's a good lad.

If we do that, more players would choose to run down their contracts like Eriksen and we’d get nothing in return.

That’s why a transfer request system exists, it’s a win win for both sides financially.

As above - that suits the club and agent, not the player.
My understanding of the formal transfer request is that the player would forfeit the remaining outstanding salary left on their contract should a transfer be agreed.

Should a transfer be agreed without a transfer request, the selling club would need to pay out the contract or some kind of loyalty bonus - or whatever relevant break clauses are in place. This would ensure the greatest financial returns for the player because during the period of their contract they believe their salary expectations now exceed what they originally agreed.

So to reiterate my original point - I don't get the sympathy towards players that want to get out of their contracts early. If it's about ambition, trophies, playing for certain clubs and nothing about money - have your agent insist on offering a 2-3 year contract. You could always sign new ones every couple of years if they want to stay.

He probably isn't. Ultimately, I just don't see him causing the same kind of issues that, say, Berbatov did. Just an opinion though, and very possibly an incorrect one.

We wouldn't waste it though.

Say we sold Kane, maybe Son and couple of others and had £250m this summer.

We could spend £30m on a striker, £20m odd each on 3 more players and have £160m left over to pay off the majority of the bank loan, and save on wages.

Good business :)
Where are we going to find top class players who want to join us for those sort of fees? Our recent record in that price range is Bergwijn, Sess, Aurier, Lucas, etc.

Plus we'll be losing all our best players initially to pay for the above.

I don't think that's good business at all.

I can't see how anyone doesn't recognize different possible responses here. Fair enough, you're not upset that he wants to go. Fine.

But I love Spurs. I loved Spurs before Kane came along, and I'll love them after. It'd be one thing if he was pushing for a move to Europe. But by all accounts, he wants to stay in the PL. Which is effectively saying: "I've given my all to trying to win with this club, but we weren't able to do it, so in the remaining years I have left, I want to give my all instead to a different club whose goal is (among other things) to ensure that my long-time club doesn't win." My view is: fuck that. Sorry.

And if someone gets tired of being a bridesmaid, fine. So they go off, to be a mercenary on a team of mercenaries, to hold up a trophy in front of fans who don't give a shit about you. That's one path. Another path is to stick with the club that's in your blood, in front of fans who worship you, who will build statues for you and sing your name, and if you don't win a trophy, there's a nobility to the effort the other mercenary path can never achieve. I admire that second path a hell of a lot more.
Brilliant - this should be carved in stone and put in a prominent place at the ground.
