Great post but you're essentially saying he isn't good enough for us but is a nice guy so it's great to have him around as a backup option should better players get injured.
Depends on how much he loves the club but I think he would thrive at a lower league club where he starts every week. There is a pattern with Winks' career with every new manager and it needs to be broken for everybody's sake.
That's not exactly what I said, though.
I said he's no superstar and yeah there are better starting options out there, but he still brings loads to the table, and not just his love & deep knowledge of the club.
To be successful nowadays if you're a club like Spurs, I do believe you need a strong and deep squad...circa 20-25 players that will all contribute positively, in their own ways. We can't afford passengers the way a City or Liverpool can.
And look at some of the best teams in history. Yes, they had 3 or 4 superstars who could produce some magic at any time, but they also had those unsexy names next to them and they were the ones doing the dirty work and in the end allowing the stars to focus solely on their thing.
The great AC Milan teams of the late 80s/early 90s had icons like Van Basten and Gullit, but they also super reliable guys like Tassotti.
Back in the day, Barca had the likes of Bakero, Ferrer, Sergi...to help out Romario and Stoichkov.
Juve had Ferrara, Pessotto...it wasn't all Zidane and Del Piero.
France from 1998-2000 had Zizou, Henry, Trezeguet, Djorkaeff...sure, but look how much guys like Deschamps, Karembeu or Boghossian contributed to their success.
Closer to home...I despise Man Utd, but would they have achieved all that success in the 90s and early noughties without their good soldiers like Butt, Phil Neville, O'Shea and others ready to step in and fight for the Beckhams, Coles, Cantonas, Van Nistelrooys? I doubt, and I think Sir Alex would too.
Winksy is no Kroos, Vieira, Xavi, Scholes or Seedorf...but we don't need him to be. If he can only contribute to us the way those great servants mentioned above did, well that's already plenty. And in my opinion, he can be just that for us.
