Levy and his crew might get paid like we are rich but we definitely dont spend on transfer like that and most of our top players dont get paid that. That is the reality.

Ndombele is our current record signing at £55m. Before then it was Sissoko at £30m and then Sanchez at £42m. Those two are not the type of players you make record signings at any club.
And before them it was Lamela and before him it was Soldado. Your point is? Most clubs broke their transfer records in the last 5 years because prices went up insanely. Spending £30m for a player is nothing special.

But what type of player you spend your money on matters.

Ndombele being our record signing is worth every penny (and more). Can you say the same for Sissoko and Sanchez?
Oh really...... if managers knew their buys would turn into shit then they wouldn’t have made that investment in the first place. Buying a player is always a bit of a 50-50 even if he’s a top player, there’s a chance he might flop and we’ve seen lots of examples in today’s world.

That is why the higher the uncertainty in the quality of the player, the less money you should risk.

A player might flop but an expensive signing shouldnt flop for lack of ability. Even if Ndombele flopped here, his potential and quality cannot be denied. Sanchez never looked (to me) like someone that could become a top quality CB even at his best

Sissoko - the season we finished 2nd. Featured more in the season we finished 3rd.

Moura - season we finished 3rd.

Aurier - season we finished 3rd, he played sporadically due to being worse than Trippier who wasn’t excellent anyway.

Sanchez - season we finished 3rd. Had a very solid partnership with Vertonghen.
and the season after finished 4th. Our position declined each season as they were added.

Whereas in earlier seasons, when we signed Son, Toby, Dele etc, our position went from 5th to 3rd to 2nd.

Its squad improvement vs squad decline imo, fueled by bad buys in the second half of Poch era

Yeah Sanchez always looked shit. Even when he slotted in fine next to Jan or got to the EL final with Ajax.

He's a major upgrade on Wimmer. Will challenge Jan for sure.

EDIT - Thinking about it, he'd start straight away in a back 3.

Looks a monster the kind of guy who can make an error but use his power and pace to get out of trouble.

By the way this thread feels like a jinx, we will probably sign Robert Huth now.

Happy with this if true. Cut from the same (different coloured) cloth as Tobes and Jan.

He's a unit, even looks a bit like Ledley.

Talent Radar Awards 2016-17: Best Young Defender - Davinson Sanchez | Outside of the Boot

Using Rose's favourite tool google, some article named him as the best young defender in Europe with Mendy second, could be guf but paying £35 mil if true and this probably sounds like we have a big player on our hands.

Probably fall through now.

I'm going to wait to get excited until I see him in a shirt but he runs pretty funny, I like it.

He's definitely a good player though

You’re aware that Levy counted on buys like Nkoudou and Janssen instead of buying proper football players, do you? You get what you pay for mate. We tried to do it differently than the other clubs we competed with and ultimately it backfired. When we bought legit good players again, like Ndombele and Lo Celso, it was already too late for Pochettino. Not that I think he would have lasted much longer anyway, the man looked like a ghost and needed some time off to get back his spark.

and simply shows that fans are fans.

I saw him with Ajax and wasnt impressed. Looked a fine athlete, but that was it. Lacked the football iq imo, which was quite evident watching him next to de ligt (who I was more interested in seeing due to the hype).

Saw him in the EL final where ManU let him have the ball (while denying de ligt) and he looked clueless on what to do with it.

We all know you're just saying that cos Jose said it in the amazon doc ffs. He was a hot prospect who regressed heavily under Jose.

But did we get what we paid for with Sanchez & co? Something went terribly wrong with the tranfers around that time (like had CL money and stopped doing due diligence) and it is what put us in the situation we are today.

Its unfortunate, cos I feel if we had made better signings back then, we would probably still have Poch with a squad that might be able to challenge for the PL title.

Sorry but havent seen the amazon doc and dont need to watch it to make my own (right/wrong) judgement of players.

I have been watching football long enough to be able to make my own evaluation of players (and some have been terribly wrong e.g. wasnt impressed the first time I saw CR).

Someone who makes us tough to beat.

Not just in how we play attacking football. But how we play defence.

I want opposing teams to hate every second that they spend playing attacking football when they face us.

Could be that we play with an intense press, could be that we play very physically in defence. Don't care. But I want us to be hard to break.

FWIW, I would imagine that Levy or whoever have a shortlist or a file of ‘next manager’ somewhere. One thing - I would hope - we could all agree on is that Levy is a shrewd operator. In running the business, the need for succession planning is really important - he was caught out early on and stumbled into good fortune with being able to promote BMJ to replace Santini. Since then, each manager has been - on paper - an improvement over the last (with the exception of Tim who was a no-risk stopgap).

Next up will be more in the mould of Poch (even Poch again?) I would imagine as it fits the needs of what will be required to build the core of a new, young, team. Jose’s here to get some trophies from what we currently have before beginning again in the next cycle of development.

We don’t have the finances to be a giant ‘finished article’ buying club, and there are very few managers / coaches who can effectively merge experience with youth. Currently, feeding around the 4th / 5th / 6th and the odd pot here and there is where we belong. Our team is ageing and other teams are having more investment than they did in the past making the track more even across the league.

It’s frustrating, but the big picture is that we are a well run club in a league with three or four teams with infinitely greater resources ahead of us. That will be the case until the stars align and we happen to have three or four youth team wonders simultaneously as with Utd 98-99 and so on.
