I used to be a big Serie A watcher but haven't seen a thing since lockdown last year other than the odd highlights.
For those of you that still watch what's the score with Gian Gasperini at Atalanta. Tiny budget and has them playing really well for a while now, they are just 2pts behind Juve. His name never gets a mention.
Not saying he's even on my list but surely he's worthy of discussion from those that know. Spill yer beanz please.........
He likes to play with three at the back, with two central midfielders and one ACM, wingbacks on both flanks and two strikers. 3-4-1-2. He wants to attack from left, right and centre, and his team has many goal-scorers (at least they did last year). They don't rely on one or two players to save the day. I didn't have many opportunities to watch them this season, unfortunately.
I particularly like Robin Gosens and Hans Hateboer (injured lately), their wing-backs. Shame that Gomez left this January. They still have quality upfront, with Ilicic, Zapata and Muriel. Their defense is not mind-blowing. The weakest part of his team, really.
This season they declined a bit compared to last year. I think this is partially because he is trying to find the right balance since they shipped 5 goals to Liverpool at home and publicly stated that they must adapt their game in order to concede less, and sometimes you must adapt to your opponent.
However, he still seems to struggle to do so since they still concede at least one per game (29 in 22 games in Italy), so they didn't get the right balance between defense and attack. Yet, they comfortably beat Liverpool away (0-2), Milan away (0-3), and drew to Juventus away 1-1 after they decided to go more 'balanced'. Overall, they are in a very changeable form recently and it's hard to tell which team will show up in the next game.
They will play in the Italian Cup final against Juventus. They sit at 6th in Serie A at the moment.
He is also backed and respected by the club, which was reflected recently in his conflict with Alejandro Gomez. Gomez was their captain and enjoyed big authority in Atalanta, after spending 7 years with them. Still, he was punished for disobedience (didn't want to play in the second half vs Midtjylland because his role on the pitch was changed, something among those lines), they sent him to the stands and shipped him to Sevilla in January.
Not sure if Gasperini is willing to move out from Italy at 63, plus, Atalanta fits him and what he wants to play, and has less pressure from the board to get immediate results.
