Player James Maddison

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Performances were alot better than when he returned though. By the time he returned, we were basically at full strength.

We lost four without him. And these were three of them:

Wolves (a) - No Romero, no Van de Ven, no Udogie, no Bentancur. No Maddison. Dier starting at centre back. No striker

Villa (h) - Emerson and Davies at CB. No Maddison. Bryan Gil at left wing. No striker.

Brighton (A) - Emerson and Davies at CB. No Bissouma, Maddison or Bentancur.

It's why it's a bit odd. What we saw at the back end of last season was nothing like what we saw at the front end. The movement from the whole team had gone. They weren't brave in their play, they lacked belief. Maddison was a big part of that.

And the sad thing is, he seems undroppable. He was actually good against both Leicester and Everton. He wasn't bad against Newcastle, still blaming him for their winner though. And he was abysmal against Woolwich. Sort of performance that should see him dropped for Brentford to let him know standards can't slip.
Whilst we have had more of the ball on the face of it, we've been massively ineffective on the whole thus far. We were more efficient last year, just shipped loads of goals. To me, they all don't fully buy into it.

Grealish always gets involved & wants the ball. There are many games where you wouldn’t notice Maddison playing. & he doesn’t look that interested in getting involved .
And even when he gets involved he's invisible, has very little intensity or cutting edge to his play anymore. Just a passenger and seems perfectly happy fade into the background. Whilst this Bergvall chap is the complete opposite! If Ange has any sense this kid needs to be one of the first on the team sheet, whatever rawness he has will be nullified by his intensity, quality of ball, inventiveness and determination to make things happen EVERY SINGLE TIME he has the ball in and around the box.

Right now he's a nice, tidy player who keeps the ball ticking and wriggles out of pressure a few times per game, not anything like the creative hub he has been for periods in his career. Does 't look like scoring, creating, or even knitting together any kind of obvious threat. Injury prone player. Not really pulling his weight for most of this calendar year.

Played a couple of nice crosses from the left yesterday but I don't think he has good dynamics with Son.

The best I've seen him was with Odobert when he made his debut playing LW with Son centrally.

I'm pretty convinced our best front 3 will end up being

Odobert (left) Solanke Son (right)

Son isn't really a shooting threat anyway these days so might as well see what happens if you move him and have a leader on either flak with Maddison behind Odobert.

Ineffective, sure.

But I think we've looked alot better than pretty much the majority of last season. (Woolwich game aside). I think we've pressed better and we look much better organised defensively.

I even think we've looked alot better from set pieces. I think it's 1 conceded in 20 corners so far this season and even then, that was more Romero being an absolute fucking fanny more than organisation from the set piece.

It's probably the only thing keeping me going. That the underlying stats are so promising. Over the course of the season, that tends to show up. Offensively, we absolutely need to improve and I do think Solanke getting the run in the team will help it.

Last year the stats pretty much had us at 5th or 6th in the league throughout most of the season and it's where we ended up. Whereas the likes of Chelsea were above us in that regard for most of the season and over the course of the year, that ended up proving to be right. Whereas so far this season we're basically top three in everything from pressing, intensity in our play, defensively... But our offense so far is bottom half.

Oh defensively we've been better and we will ship set piece goals, nobody is immune to it. We are 5 conceded goals better off in the three like for like fixtures so far. Just brain farts. Which happens. But when it keeps happening you have to address it.

Romero was reportedly suffering from a fever (according to a couple of tweets) and came back from an arduous international trip. I know it's Woolwich, but surely you'd make a decision based on the best outcome and Romero might not have been it?

He's a Btech #10.

An adequate squad player, sure.

He was most effective for us the first 1/4 of last season (when we/Angeball were a bit of an unknown), high-pressing the opponents' defense.

Son at RW :ange-facepalm2:

Son is a square peg in a round hole in this system and it is hard to admit for some fans but it's true.

Play Moore - Solanke - Odobert in the cups. I guarantee we look a more fluid attack.

My biggest issue with Maddison right now is that he is so ponderous with the ball. He wastes too much time holding onto the ball and inviting pressure and tackles (and then we wonder why he keeps having niggling injuries) when he should be releasing it much much quicker.

Some of it has to be systematic. Because we seem to only pass in specific patterns. Which is frustrating since we have wingers that would be very well suited to running in behind off of Maddison long balls.

Another concern with Maddison is in the dressing room. The biggest problem for Ange is can he keep control and not lose the dressing room. I think most players are still behind him but he needs to watch out for the likes of Maddison, Romero, Bentacur etc.

I think that all players who are in a small "crisis" are quickly written off.
When I saw Maddison last season, I thought how lucky it was for Tottenham that he came to us.
He showed that he can do it!

Now he is playing somewhat below his potential.
It could also be due to Ange's system, but it contradicts then to his performances in the last season.

In Germany, Andy Brehme once said: "If you have shit on your foot, you have shit on your foot!"

We all sometimes don't perform to our normal form at work.
(I myself showed in those moments that I can do something.)

So I'm giving him the chance to get back to his form. It'll be fine!
