Kicker report this morning that Tottenham Hotspur may consider recalling Japhet Tanganga from Augsburg.

The 24-year-old joined the Bundesliga club on loan in the summer, but is yet to make an appearance for Augsburg. The Englishman took longer than planned to recover from an injury and although reportedly training well, hasn’t been an option for the first team so far as we head into December.

Following the dismissal of Enrico Maaßen and appointment of Jess Thorup, Augsburg have now switched to a back four which further limits Tanganga’s chances with currently six players fighting for two positions.

Jeff Gouweleeuw and Felix Uduokhai are considered starters with Maximilian Bauer providing cover. Patric Pfeiffer, who joined the club in the summer from Augsburg, is also considered an option with both Tanganga and Frederik Winther currently the fifth and sixth choices.

Tanganga was injured for the first seven Bundesliga games, made the bench against Köln on November 4 but hasn’t made the matchday squad since. Likely unhappy with his playing time, Tottenham Hotspur would probably consider terminating the player’s loan in January.

No real sources there, just a German paper saying Spurs may consider recalling him if he's not playing. Obviously depends on whether he's actually out of favour or just not really fit yet

Not in the squad again today in Augsburg's last game before a winter break. Not out injured, he's been in first team training for the last couple of months but yet to get any minutes this season, outside of the first half of a friendly. Worse than Nile John's minuteless loan a couple of seasons ago who at least made the matchday squad a handful of times. Surely going to have to recall and try to loan elsewhere. His contact is up at the end of 2025 so probably have to loan to a much worse team and then try to move him on in the summer

Augsburg on their winter break until January 13. No word on JT returning so maybe he stays in Germany?
Slight chance we could use him in January?
Don't think so, otherwise we wouldn't be able to loan him out again. Need him playing regularly to have a chance of offloading him in the summer with a year left on his contract so probably have to recall and loan him to a worse team if he's happy to do that

His contract next year is like £1M - not hard to just pay him off.

That said, doubt he'd help us in the least so no thanks.

The conditional obligation to buy doesn't look likely to kick in if he never plays - imagine it was tied to appearances/minutes which he looks well short of ever reaching.

Gold:
Tanguy Ndombele, Troy Parrott and Japhet Tanganga are all on their winter breaks at Galatasaray, Excelsior Rotterdam and Augsburg respectively, although Tanganga could soon also end up back in north London with the Bundesliga side looking to reduce the size of their squad after a change in manager and a switch from a back three to a back four, meaning six centre-backs for two spots.
