yes, I mean some of these players - most notably Palhinha - have actually played very well for RDZ so far. Make no mistake about what a big deal getting out of this situation is and what it says about a player's character. Compare with finishing 6 or 7th etc etc

Probably count himself unlucky not to go, as overall he's had a decent season, particularly recently, despite having 3 managers.

They have about 20 better central midfielders than him. The team with Joao Neves, Bruno, Vitinha, Silva do not need Joao fucking Palhinha.
Says more about the competition than it does about him, he’s decent and would get into most international sides comfortably
Their midfield depth looks thin- Cronaldo again while Palhinha stays home. They might come to regret that.
I highly doubt they’ll be watching him waddle about against a disinterested Chelsea while unable to pass a football and think darn, we’re really missing out here.

He's a nice option to have to see out a lead for half an hour though. A tournament squad isn't the 26 best players, it's the best 26 man team.
Palhinha is a very good, experienced player who brings maturity and leadership. Subject to us staying up and bringing in at least 1 other CM who can pass the ball then I would sign Palhinha as an alternative option. What I don’t want to see is a trio of Palhinha, Bentancur and Gallaghers next season.
However, what worries me is both the lack of ‘legs’ and ‘creativity’ in central midfield. Selling Bissouma and Sarr and signing only 1 CM won’t fix this. As much as Bergvall and Gray have huge potential and Palhinha and Bentancur have experience, there’s a lack of the required quality to be competitive with the top 6, even 8 clubs. It may be that we don’t sign Palhinha or let Bentancur go, and bring in 2 new central midfielders.
