Pre ENIC we had the most FA Cups in English football.

ENIC didn't take us anywhere. Top 4 don't mean shit neither does getting to finals.

I don't think we are worse than before but we aren't better that we were before they arrived. We just have a nicer house. That house can be empty with 2 more bad seasons.

And under Sugar we were going nowhere fast.

ENIC took us from perennial mid table club to top 4 over achievers, that's an undeniable fact.

We are a world away from the Sugar regime, anyone denying that is just straight up lying.

Incentive for who?

Do Spurs fans really have more to celebrate than Villa because we had more seasons of CL football?
The owners & modern day fans. Yeah I too don’t get that excited to finish top 4 & then knocked out the following season. I get Newcastle loving it as it’s new but it wears off. But as you say, top 4 isn’t a trophy at the end of the day.

Only if you think Top 4 is overachieving.

It doesn't do anything for fans.

Based on finances anything above 6th is seen as an overachievement, again factual.

You're coming with an emotional perspective

Unless you're happy to win a cup every 10 years but flirt with relegation or finish mid table, if that what makes you happy and is seen as successful then not sure football is for you.

Not factual, subjective.

The way this team plays at time is worth watching. There is at least that but adding an extra game every week against teams from weak European leagues isn't anything to aspire to.

I saw Barca in person this weekend, I wouldn't be excited to see us play them any more than I would against Brighton. I'd actually prefer to watch us play Brighton.

It's a business overachievement maybe. Not a footballing one though.

I mean it's the only objective way to measure how you are meant to perform against your rivals, 6th highest wage bill generally means we ought to be finishing 6th, anything above that is over achieving.

Not trying to turn this into a top 4 vs trophy debate but if you want long term continued success the odd trophy win doesn't do it unless you're finishing in the top 4 or you're progressing as a club, in turn that sets you up for long term success so you become a club who can compete in all comps.

Would love a trophy but it's more like the cherry on the icing, we're just in a world where fans are trophy or bust which is a consequence of the social media age where you'll seen as an absolute failure or bottler if you don't pick up silverware.

Where has our Top 4 overachievement actually got us?

It's an objective way to measure success as a business like any PNL statement.

Pretending it's anything else is, well, pretending.

None of the trophies we have in our cabinet have the club's balance statement written on them or mentioned in italics in the note underneath.

“If you don’t win anything, you have had a bad season.” - Bill Nich

: "The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." - Blanchflower.

Our current reality is somewhere between those two. We can't expect to win the prem every year but Top 4 is still a bad year if you don't win anything. Especially if you hire killjoy "tactical" managers like Jose and Conte to do it.

But if that's your logic where did our last trophy win get us? Last time we won a cup, we finished 11th, is that your idea of success?
