13 years ago today, big Martin Jol was appointed as our manager and our fortunes began to change...

Jol "built our foundations". What a load of bollocks!

Don't get me wrong, I love the big man and he improved us as a team and got us into Europe in back to back seasons. He put a smile back on our faces. It's right to say that under him our fortunes turned, it's right to acknowledge this as the point in which Tottenham's fortunes had changed for the better but to lay claim that he laid the "foundations" of this side is absolute nonsense.

What foundations, what element of that Jol team is remotely close to this one? Jol's team was still stacked with unprofessional players, there wasn't a McDonalds drive-in in North London that didn't have Spurs player peering through blacked out windows of their Range Rovers shovelling Big Mac's down their cake holes, or a night club that didn't have a Spurs player falling out of at 3am. It's like saying Mark Huges laid the foundations for Guardiola's Citeh.

Love Jol, one of my favourite managers, prefer him to Rednapp, a far more appealing and honest character.

Well it’s a gradual process that built on our return to the top 6, later build up would have been quite hard had we weren’t a known European side with top 5 finishes attained through the Jol project.

We hadn’t been in European football in forever before Jol came along, since 2006 we’ve only been without Euro footy once - 2009/10.

Jol had his flaws but he oversaw a period where the club took its first steps of improvement. His 2005/06 team/system was really impressive IMO.

I'd have clicked agree were it not for the last paragraph.

It's more to do with Enic's takeover, he just happened to be at the right place at the right time. His shortcomings eventually caught up with him. Great bloke though.

very revisionist.

ENIC had been in charge for at least 3 full seasons before Jol. sacked Graham, got in Hod the God, left us with Pleat and preffered Santini. Jol came at Frank Arnesen’s insistence.

More than building foundations it was the way it felt good to be a Spurs man for the first time in ages, he restored some pride after years of fucking shit. If I look back to when our fortunes started to change it would be with Big Martin.

I wonder whether it was a turning point for Levy too. The way he sacked MJ was appalling, possibly a personal low point in Levy's tenure (well that and the flirting with Stratford), but perhaps afterwards he began on his own gradual path to realising we needed to do things differently...

You have to admit he was a bit fortunate to get the job...I really wanted him to do well, he was just a bit limited as a manager.

Terrible the way he went, Levy as Chairman is ultimately responsible but it can't be underestimated the influence of this cunt..........

Look at the fucking state of that! Back then we went from one scandal to another, there was hardly a month that went by without something truly cringeworthy happening.

All you've got to do is track the history of this wanker and literally everything he's involved with is dodgy. Since he fucked off so too have the embarrassments, what a coincidence.

I'm lead to believe he now is a "star" in the States on some shite called Real Housewives of Beverley Hills, where he goes by the name of PK. WHAT. A. CUNT.

You knew there was going to be goals when you went to a Spurs match under Jol , I loved him , as others have said he made it fun to watch Spurs again
Was he the greatest manager ? no but I don't know how any spurs fan cannot remember that time with a certain degree of fondness

Is that Paul Kelmsey or whatever his name is? Quite forgotten about him, what an utter cunt

Loved him for the fact he put a bit of pride and resilience back into the team. We were exciting to watch and started to challenge top 6 and play in Europe.

His sacking by spurs was an absolute disgrace. Regardless of what was said or promised by whom behind the scenes, the club acted disgracefully, a match was being played and most people knew he would gone that night.

Jol has remained classy since then and always speaks highly of the team and the WHL crowd at the time.

"Build our foundations" might be a bit strong, but I do think it was Jol who set us out on the road we're currently on. Changing the club ethos doesn't happen overnight or even in a season or two. Limited as a manager, perhaps, but he was the right man for us at the time.

He didn't build the foundations of our team however he did change the fortunes of our club!

Before Jol we were a team expected to finish mid table or below, under Jol we became a team who people believed could challenge for a top 4 place and we haven't really looked back since. This transition shouldn't be ignored, Jol gave Spurs fans belief at a time when we needed it most.

It kind of pains me that Ramos won a trophy with a Jol team, big martin deserved it more. And to be honest I felt he would of turned it round that season he was sacked. A big shame, but hes no Pochettino either.

The step up from Ardiles/Francis/Graham/Hoddle/Santini to Jol was massive. Those others were the only managers I knew in my time as a fan. Spurs under Jol were a different proposition entirely, epitomised by that win over Chelsea. Teams stopped wanting to come to the Lane.

Nowadays the step up to Poch has been equally huge.
