When did the definition of "bottled" get changed to mean " lost a match because the opposition played better"?

I must have missed that memo.
When Spurs do it.

Agree on more rotation, better strength in depth. But also perhaps having a better plan B when we can't press, which I think we have done to some extent (look at Dortmund home and Madrid away) but maybe we could improve at this.

I think the game plan against United was to bombard them from the start and try and get a lead. It was- IMO- the right plan and nearly worked. A 2-0 lead would have probably won us the game. Unfortunately Dembele made an error which led to a goal, let's not forget against most teams it would not be a goal from there, it was also an excellent cross and header.

Man United don't play the same way and therefore were much fitter in the closing stages, we had burned ourselves out in the first part of the game, but if I was manager I would do the same again as the best way to beat them, and hope that we get that second goal or hold onto the lead better.

This predicament baffles me... Where did the flexibility of early this season dissapear to over the latter half of the season?

There was a point where we were changing formation 2/3 times per game yet we've reverted to our previously 1-dimensional selves of Pochs first yr or 2.

All that said, i acknowledge that a patient 'keep doing what your doing" approach has bagged the points for us in the 80th+ on a number of occasions...

Presents tricky dilemmas this management malarkey eh? ...Who'd have thought it eh? ...All seems so easy on a computer game!

Under Sherwood we also lost 5-1 to City, 4-0 to Chelsea, and 4-0 to Liverpool.

Meanwhile he almost pushed Lloris and Vertonghen out the door, and in one match played Sigurdsson and Chadli in center-midfield.

He had no badges, yet was no worse than AVB who had PL experience
If people expected top 4 under Tim, then they should be expecting titles under Poch....should have reigned in your expectations in 2013.

"Relegation" is a rather OTT tho, no?

We were 5th!

I said relegation scrap, which usually follows a manger losing the dressing room.
AVB rode the coat tails of Redknapps team in his first season, but much like Ramos after Jol the novelty wore very thin later on.
He had already turned us from the most exciting team in the PL
(Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says 'Tottenham are Premiership's best team at the moment') into a turgid pile of shit which is what got him sacked at Chelsea.

Not sure what that has to do with anything... You were complaining about hyperbole only to then suggest we were in such peril which is a gross exageration.

More than a bit rich is all...

Got nothing to do with what i think of the individual managers past or present.

So what is it? Tim was unfairly maligned because he saved us from relegation, or we were wrong to expect him to do better?

We were flat-track bullies under AVB that got blown away by the big sides, and we were flat-track bullies under Tim that got blown away by the big sides. The results really didn't change very much, only the methods did. They were both absolutely woeful managers, but I do grant Sherwood credit for giving youth a chance.

People might not like him and thats fine, but that doesnt run parallel with "he was shit".
Life doesnt work like that.

He was clueless like the football we started playing under him. Adebayor had a brief renaissance under him having not played for months and being desperate for a new contract but his enthusiasm soon wavered and he soon reverted to the half hearted headless chicken he was before. Sherwood has not exactly shined since leaving us which speaks volumes and his interviews at the time and his punditry since show he has little tactical nous and he was clearly out of his depth in the premier league.
Just an opinion but to me that means he was shit!

I never said he saved us from relegation, and when I posted it I was careful to make that distinction, but predictably everyone ignores everything else I said and jumps on something I didnt say.

You give him credit for playing the youth, that would be Harry Kane for the most part, but the words just cant leave your mouth can they. As Ive said, Sherwood had never managed a team before in his entire career, so if people expected him to do better than 6th, then that really is their problem.

He did a decent job, considering his lack of experience. Ive said he wasnt good enough for the long haul, Im not sure what everyones problem is and why they are dragging it on and on and on.

People take exception to the words "stopped us getting dragged into a relegation scrap", but no one gives a shit when someone says he took us from 5th to 6th, when we was 7th after AVBs final game.

Noooooooo, noooo thats fine
