To be honest when we have the ball our wing-backs do play like wingers.
I find it quite odd how close AVB was to getting the formula right.
He wanted to do exactly what Poch does; have inside forwards and use full backs to stretch the defence. The issue is, he also loved to play defensive football so the full backs weren't allowed to get forward or press, as they could put themselves out of position.
He got it 70%, but that 30% meant it all fell to pieces and looked awful.
Yes, but the difference is, that our forwards create space for the wingbacks to run into. It would be way different if he was played as an actual wingTo be honest when we have the ball our wing-backs do play like wingers. They help to stretch the defence so that our attacking players can find space. Plus, Davies and especially Trippier have a good cross on them.
I think any of our wing-backs could play on the right/left of midfield, as wingers. Trippier overlapping Walker on the right of a 4-4-2 would give most teams something to worry about - they'd be strong in defence as well as going forward, with a mix of pace and power with finesse and crossing ability. However we don't play that way, and our wing-backs aren't really suited to playing as inverted attacking players, at least not compared to those we already have in those positions.
Thanks for clarifying, I think you're spot onpretty much what you already said.
Not sure if you're familiar with gibbsy but he always insisted we play trippier and rose on the actual wing with davies and walker behind them. He is now seeing Trippier and Davies' performance yesterday as vindication for his views.
However he doesn't quite get it that the system we play with the three guys behind the striker inverting/switching all the time is the key to the success of our full-backs forward movement. They have the space to run into thanks to the attacking players occupying defenders. They also have the freedom to do so because of the Dier plus 2CB behind them.

It's fine having a system, as long as it plays to your strengths.I find it quite odd how close AVB was to getting the formula right.

I don't really remember us doing this last season though. Is that becauseWhere poch has it spot on is the CB split with Dier dropping between them. Jan/Wimmer and Toby are then playing as half CB, half full back if we get countered and are able to close up the space on the wings faster, allowing more time for the rest of the team to get back and defend.
I don't really remember us doing this last season though. Is that because
- We didn't have the right personnel, with neither Bentaleb nor Mason really suited to dropping?
- It's a new system being tried by Poch this season?
- I am blind/thick/have a bad memory?
This guy has dedication, I will give him that. Slightly worrying it is all to wind us up. Could be a serial killer![]()
Well, one of them is vitalspurs, who have banned him, so I guess they are only there for shits and giggles...
