That came from the club to placate fans that a move for a CM wasn't happening. They spent 1st team money on Gray because they fully believe by the time he's a locked in starter at CM, he will be worth more than we pay. The issue is they needed to keep fans on board whilst that happens. IMO

What they should have done is make fund and wages available for both.

And after all that, over the next 2 months, Gray and Bergvall could easily win a starting role in our MF.

The next cab off that particular (MF) rank (*) is replacing Biss & Bentancur... (Not piling even more bodies into MF that registration regulations won't actually facilitate anyway)

Entering this season with those 2 + Sarr, Gray & Berg (+ Kulu sometimes taking up CM duty) for 2 roles wasn't a dereliction.

LB & RW there's a discussion to be had; but just cos fans have gone cold on both Biss & Benta in the first half of this season doesn't befit revisionism about what should have been done in terms of even more CM recruitment this past summer.

(*Doh... There's that phrase again! lol)

Depends on what you think the duty is.

If you think challenging to win the PL is the duty then not upgrading those 2-3 senior CM spots was probably a dereliction of that duty.

The plus to come out of this imo is Pape Sarr. Not just the Saints game but in general this season he’s taken a pretty big leap in the level he’s playing. We might not have seen that. But now that we have it’s still clear which are the 2 players who are fighting not to get upgraded in the summer or even January.

Unless one was banging the "get rid of Biss & Bentancur" drum (a notion that itself opens up it's own debate) in the summer then it IS revisionism.

I think Sarr has come out of a dip looking like an even better player than he was before the dip...... Lesson: Growth of young players isn't linear. He's playing smarter and is better on the ball.......

If I was saying we needed a top class senior CM in the summer then it wasn’t fucking revisionism at all.

Agree on Sarr.

Utopian wish-lists aren't the same as actual practicalities of squad building...... (Let's face it, in a world with no constraints; who doesn't want 2 x elite players in every position?).

.......Again; did you want rid of Biss and/or Benta last summer?

Very tempted last summer and after some very god performances from Alfie Devine in preseason than I'd have been tempted to keep Devine as the replacement - he has high energy levels decent passing (including long passes) and tackling, possibly best position is as a deep lying midfield player but also plays as an AM and has played (particularly in E u19/E u20) as left or right winger, so versatility is excellent.

And crucially counts as List B for EL - so is extra to the main squad, and if we were confident enough to either sell Bissouma or take him out of EL squad (keeping him for PL ) then we could have included Spence in EL squad in his place. So a double bubble

Now Devine has done an extra half season at Westerlo (Belgian league assessed as being better than Championship), It would be high on my agenda this January too - Devine always plays with high energy and commitment, something not all Spurs players show.

Devine looks class and the kinda player that will flourish with better players

I remember wanting to upgrade at 6 was near the top of most people's wishlist last summer.

Neither Biss nor Bentancur have shown that they have what it takes. Both good in moments and offer slightly different things but neither are the midfield general we require.

Next summer we should absolutely move one of them on (not fussed which) and bring in a top 6. With Gray, Sarr, Bergvall, Maddison, Kulu and maybe Devine we are well stocked otherwise.

If we're looking at two marquee signings to elevate the first team it's RW and 6.

Lol - we closed last season on a 7 month long run in the league which was equivalent to our worst season in 15 years. With a manager who had never played or coached in a top 5 league before.

No one - no one - thought challenging for the PL title this season was credible.
