Classic overrating young players after a couple good turns/runs/whatever. The kid has played a couple games. He is certainly not “already better than Johnson.” He’s never even scored a goal for the senior side. He hasn’t even had a chance to have good form/bad form/how does he respond. I’m excited about him, he definitely looks to have a lot of ability but there’s a lot more to being a top player.
Young players frequently look bright and confident when they break through and most fizzle out. Are they as good after they make a couple mistakes? After they go through a rough patch of form? Pick up some injuries, play 3 games in a week? Werner at RB Leipzig was better than anything Mikey Moore has ever done. People used to do this with PEH all the time. Every MF who did a body feint was already better than PEH who meanwhile was playing 50 games a year with good performances against big teams in club and international competition. But when young players haven’t played enough to actually make mistakes, have their weaknesses found out, etc. we just think they are “better.” It’s already happened with Bergvall imo. People were anointing him after some good turns in his first sub appearance. Then he makes a mistake, plays some more and has just been ok. Just as we shouldn’t cast young players out early…we probably shouldn’t anoint them so early either.
Well if you can’t see his talent then I don’t know what to say. It’s obvious he isn’t just “another youngster”. He looks ready. He looks like the level of player that Rooney, Fowler, Owen, Bale etc went on to become when they got a chance at the similar age. Whether he goes on to have that kind of career is unknown, but when you’ve seen enough of these players at that age it’s obvious they are above the level of just another young player. It’s probably safe to say he’s not going to be another Andy Turner.
