I honestly think he still would of had a good couple of years in him IF he stayed at Spurs, with top players around him.

I think it was a step down to Hamburg and he couldn't do it all on his own.

Was gutted when he left, will always be a legend in my eyes. Also, remember we basically replaced him with Dempsey. Dempsey had a decent season in his own right but we sorely missed Rafa's creativity. I have no doubt we would have been better off keeping him for at least another season.

As mentioned in the article it wasn't at all one sided why he left but clearly AVB wasn't a fan of his and he saw the writing on the wall amongst personal issues.

Like Rafa I reminisce about that summer as well. What if Redknapp's head wasn't turned and he stayed on? AVB got some decent results but really took us backwards from a footballing style and what we had seen under Harry. I think Bale's heroics really warped the reality of what AVB did. We were absolutely dire under him and wish we never would have brought him to our club.

Siggy replaced him.

I think it's easy to rose tint Rafa's time at Spurs.

He was a extremely popular player (see Lewis Holtby or Sandro), with pedigree who signed for the club unexpectedly.

On form he was unplayable, but a luxury player in the purest sense.

Unable to put in more than a 50 min shift, a stubbornness to only play in his prefered "No 10" position and a reluctance to commit to any defensive responsibilities. You can see why AVB considered him unsuitable.

That said, I will always love him for the passion he showed for the shirt and his performances against the cunts down the road.

The affair was over too early, but "It's better to burn out, than to fade away"

Now you're just being a cunt by comparing him to Holtby. Rafa was streaky, often injured, and never 90-min fit, but he was class for us.

AVB maybe wasn't wrong for not pandering to him and telling him that he was an automatic starter, but he definitely could have handled it better, and without pushing him towards the exit.

That's a very early and harsh play of the "cunt card".

Shame his fitness was gone, but what a player, but he also brought in him a winning mentality, he was a breath of fresh air amongst the usually pessimistic ambience of the club.

No, you misunderstand me. I'm saying he was similar to Holtby (and Sandro) in that his personality contributed to his popularity with the fans, he was clearly a more talented footballer than Holtby.

Can people stop criticising Rafa, please?

It's Rafa van Der Vaart....So just stop it.

I'd take him back purely to bring on against the scum, score and then give it the old :vdvshh:

24 goals in 63 games ... can we have more luxury players like this please?!?

I remeber seeing van der Vaart playing for Ajax and Hamburg as a youngster and hoping one day we'd sign him (but we were proper shit back then, and had no chance) - he then went to Real Madrid and I accepted it'd probably never happen...

I couldn't believe it when we signed him, it came out of nowhere and I was so fucking happy!

And what a player he was, for us. That first season especially, he was awesome. The next season he couldn't play a full 90 minutes, but I will always regard him as a Spurs legend.
