You'd also have to recognize that Argentinian league football is in a different world to the Scottish, Japanese or Australian leagues
Japan and Australia are miles off, but Scotland and Argentina are very comparable levels of football.

The Old Firm are more financially dominant in Scotland than River and Boca are in Argentina, but then Gallardo didn't dominate that league.

Gallardo has never experienced anything on the radar screen of the PL, it's the exact same situation.

Yes, it’s probably got nothing to do with the fact that he’s been successful everywhere he’s coached and improved every team that has played for him.
It’s because he’s free. That’s obviously it.

I watch a lot of football and have no contract. Maybe I should give Danny a bell?
His teams, South Melbourne, Aussie U17 and U20s and Celtic, yep I'm sure Levy looked at that and thought yep I'll have him over Nagglesman,

There have been 12 different champions in Argentina this century. I know that figure is somewhat skewed because for a number of years there were two champions as the season was split into two parts, La Apertura (Opening) and La Clausura (Closing), but even so, it's still the most competitive league in the world using that criterion.

You have to go back to 1984-85 and Aberdeen for the last non-Old Firm league champions.

Oh, and Argentina has had four different Copa de Libertadores champions this century.

I see you’re selective in picking out his past appointments. You might mention that he was the first coach to win the Asia Cup for Australia or that he took Yokohama F. Marinos to their first league title in 15 years because that might ruin your lazy ‘Levy does everything on the cheap’ narrative.

I want Nagelsmann too — but not because he’s coming from Bayern. I’m far more impressed with what he did prior at smaller clubs.

It's a more competitive league, unquestionably.

But if it's a higher standard of football, it's only very marginally so, and in Rangers, Ange has been competing against a club better than anybody in Argentina, not to mention their forays in UEFA competition.

And if Gallardo had been doing in Argentina anything close to what Ange has done at Celtic, that would be eye-opening, but he only won one league title in 8 years at the helm, a span in which Boca won five.

Gallardo winning the Libertadores twice is great, but it's the same sort of achievement as Ange winning the Asian Cup with Australia. A cool exotic football story, but nothing whatsoever to do with the PL.

Genuine question for those banging the Gallardo drum...

Have you seen loads of River Plate, is it more based on hearsay or is it simply because he's Argentinian?

Does his supposed lack of English concern you?
Lack of English doesn't concern me. He'll get up to speed.

I haven't watched much River games, but he is a manager that:
  1. Adapts the style to the players he has and the opponent he is facing
  2. Is excellent at in-game management
  3. Doesn't care about established names and would play a youngster over a star based on merit
  4. Fielded competitive teams, even though every year he lost his best players
  5. Very few managers in world football are better at preparing their players for big games
  6. Will take the cups seriously
  7. Is adored by his players and the fans
  8. Built an identity at River that everyone got behind
I think all of the above would suit us quite nicely.

Gallardo would be incredibly exciting.

Obviously a complete out there risk! And completely unknown but it would get my dick tingling.

Anyway……

Welcome Ange.
