Chelsea will have to pay compensation to Brighton & Hove Albion if they want Sam Jewell to start recruiting players in time for the summer transfer window.

Jewell, the head of recruitment at Brighton, has been placed on gardening leave while the notice period on his contract expires, after accepting a new position at Chelsea less than 16 months after the London club poached his predecessor, Paul Winstanley.

Jewell, 34, who joined Brighton in 2016 as Under-21 recruitment manager, took over from Winstanley in November 2022, when he was appointed director of global talent and transfers at Chelsea.

The Sussex club thanked Jewell for his service in a short statement, which announced that assistant technical director, Mike Cave, and scouting and intelligence manager, George Holmes, would assume his responsibilities with immediate effect.

Brighton said they are confident that they have the structure in place at the club to ensure a smooth transition for Jewell’s replacement. Succession plans for about 30 individuals at the club, thought to include the head of recruitment, are regularly reviewed.

Jewell’s new role is understood to be a senior global scouting position across the Chelsea owners’ multi-club model, involving negotiations for Strasbourg as well as the London club, the Telegraph reported last week.

His departure is the latest in a series of moves for both players and staff from Brighton to Chelsea, who are three places below the south coast side in tenth in the Premier League.

Winstanley’s move followed the appointment of Graham Potter as head coach in September 2022, with four of Potter’s backroom staff also moving from Brighton to Chelsea.

Chelsea paid Brighton substantial compensation for Potter’s appointment but dismissed him after less than seven months in charge when Chelsea dropped into the bottom half of the table. Of his backroom staff, only Ben Roberts, the goalkeeping coach, remained.

Other former Brighton staff at Chelsea include Kyle Macauley, a data analyst.

On the field, Chelsea signed Moisés Caicedo, the Brighton midfielder, in the summer for a British transfer record of £115 million, and the goalkeeper Robert Sánchez for £25 million. The previous season, Chelsea signed the defender, Marc Cucurella, for an initial £56 million.

Jewell, who is the son of the former Wigan Athletic and Derby County manager Paul Jewell, was previously chief scout for Swindon Town and opposition scout for Newport County, before working his way through the ranks at Brighton as emerging talent recruitment manager, scouting manager, and then head of recruitment. He played a part in the signings of Alexis Mac Allister, Caicedo, Facundo Buonanotte and Julio Enciso.

Jewell said last year: “We’re very lucky at Brighton because our succession planning means there is very little upheaval when people do move on.

“Departures are part and parcel of football and while it was sad to see two really good people leave us, it has opened doors to others, including me. Following Paul’s departure, I took on the head of recruitment role on an interim basis and it was very much business as usual.”

Florent Ghisolfi is the architect of OGC Nice’s success this season, and according to The Athletic, he is the subject of interest from Liverpool, who are looking to fill their sporting director role.

Since joining Nice from RC Lens in October 2022, Ghisolfi has steered the project at Nice back in the right direction. Most notably, he is responsible for the arrival of Francesco Farioli as manager, who has received great plaudits for the job he has done, taking Les Aiglons to third in Ligue 1.

Liverpool are “impressed” with Ghisolfi’s work since taking the helm at Nice and are considering bringing the Frenchman to Merseyside, according to The Athletic. Jorg Schmadtke had occupied the role until the end of his mandate in January; a replacement is expected at the end of the season, in what will be a summer of change at Anfield, with Jürgen Klopp also set to depart.

FSG’s preference is to bring former sporting director Michael Edwards back to the club, however, he is unlikely to return, having left Liverpool back in 2022. Alongside Ghisolfi, there is also an interest in Frederic Massara.
