I don't have a problem with players going to Saudi Arabia, but when you make yourself out to be an LGBT ally then I do believe that you should be willing to make sacrifices for that cause, like not taking money from an extremely anti-LGBT nation. Especially when you're already incredibly wealthy.

I do have some sympathy with footballers in that whether they mean to or not they get dragged into politics but yeh he probably should have simply kept more quiet during his career if he wanted to keep his options more open, now he looks fake.

I do actually know a gay guy down my local who worked in Saudi for 6 months, obviously he couldn’t be openly gay which for him must have been hard as he is very forward.

Weird thing is he said Saudi is 2/3X more gay more than U.K. in some ways. His ‘’gaydar’’ was at overload at points, the woman are segregated from society heavily and a lot of the men are very touchy with other men probably as many of them have no access to women. In public there is the pretence of piousness and in private it is like a French whorehouse, whiskey is heavily used by the Saudis not just westerners in compounds, they fucking love it apparently.

He was part of the so called Saudiisation drive. This is where Saudis who have gotten fat off oil money learn to work again and get training. Apparently they are not good workers but he had to write up when he left how great they all where.

Sounded like a really odd country. It would be the western equivalent of growing up ultra rich with evangelical parents but secretly being up for partying all the time. Like an entire country in the closest.

Cunt is front a center for any and every social cause going the moment they arise..... The EPLs self-appointed so-called moral captain.

Utter hypocrite.

Even the LBGTQ aspect aside..... He's positioned himself as a social justice supremo yet is going to accept 700kpw (just to kick a ball around during semi-retirement) from a state (which is frittering away 10s of BILLIONS - hundreds by the time they're done! - to sports-wash itself....Football, golf, WWE, Boxing etc.) that has a 20% poverty rate.

Rather than sports-wash; why not clean up their rep the old fashioned way and actually look after their people instead?

700k p/w guarantees his ancestors ancestors never have to work a day in their lives. Fair play, I’d take it too. So would a lot of the people parading their morals without ever being faced with a choice like this.

Last big payday to go from rich to ultra rich.

I’m not sure how you can say fair play to someone who claimed to be an LGBT ally and then accepts a big money move to assist in laundering the reputation of one of the most anti-LGBT nations on earth.

Seems pathetic to me.

If an anti racist activist accepted a similar amount of money from a far right racist political party for example, I don’t think anyone would try to justify it because it builds generational wealth.

I'm sure you're pro LGBT.

If I offered to more than triple your wages right now but you have to go work in Dubai for a couple of years, would you take it?

Being entirely honest to yourself.

Henderson has strong pro-LGBT views and has been vocal about it. He also has personal goals and wants to earn as much money in his career for himself/his family as he can. He has chosen to prioritise the latter (as most people would).

It probably means he shouldn't be a figurehead for these issues now, and it definitely means he's not some Saint. But I'm not gonna turn around and call him a bad person for it, because I've never been offered 700k per week.

(The far right analogy doesn't really work. If he was going over there to suddenly talk about how he agrees with their laws etc, then yeah he'd be a total scumbag. He's going over there to kick a ball around, not join a political party.)

Not really a fan of the player myself, but that's just an idiotic and insulting bid.

ETH not overtly keen to sell.
HM not keen to leave
Man U reportedly not interested in bids under 40m

Meanwhile their the fans can't stand him....... Would you like salt to go with your froth?

The way I see it is if you become a public activist for a certain cause, then I do expect more from you than the average person. I’m not saying you need to do civil disobedience and get arrested but I do think you should at least stand up for your principles on certain occasions including this one.

In this case, I don’t think expecting Henderson to reject a lucrative contract to show his commitment to LGBT rights is asking for much. Especially when he can probably sign a deal from other clubs that will still pay him a lot of money. I do think he should be willing to make that sacrifice and walk away from it.

If I was in his position I would like to think I wouldn’t take the offer, but who knows. It is hard to turn down that money, but I just think if you are going to be a public figure in support for a cause, then there should be times when you give something up for your principles. I really don’t think I’m expecting much. Rejecting a contract for 30 million in exchange for something like 10 million when you’re already rich is reasonable in my opinion.

I do agree my point with the political party wasn’t analogous, I noticed that after posting it.

I think a more comparable example were the rebel tours in South Africa for cricket in the 80s. Cricketers were paid to basically assist the Apartheid South African government to launder their reputation to seem less racist.

It's the Liverpool fans I feel sorry about in all this. They have been pointing at captain Henderson and all his great morals for years and now they have been made to look foolish, almost hypercritical. It must hurt to be a Liverpool fan and be shown as a hypocrite, so new to them.

And if you championed your beliefs for years you'd be called a cunt too. Get paid but take the stick, that's the payoff.

I would take a shot load of money for most things. I would buy a tower and hide from the shit.

One can only hope that the city of Liverpool will ever fully recover from this.

For me, this just means he's not as passionate about that particular cause as he made out ... which makes him normal, instead of exceptional. Only a very small % of exceptional people would stick to their beliefs and turn down the mega bucks in this scenario imo. And most of those won't kick a ball around for a living.

It's more than lucrative, when you look at taxation and the like he's probably getting 4-5 times as much a week, plus signing on bonuses, plus all the perks they've probably offered him on top. I can imagine if I was a footballer and can feel the legs going I'd want to add that extra layer of security no matter how much I'd earned, and Henderson has never been a top of the range baller. This money, for him, is insanity.

He definitely shouldn't be hailed for his LGBT work anymore .. but nor should he be hated for it, he's just done what most people would be expected to do. It is what it is. Football is a dirty, money focused business and the occasional nods to LGBT rights/say no to racism etc have always been disingenuous - 99% of people involved in the sport will sell out to Saudi money if they get the chance. Reality is most people will prioritise personal lives/people close to them over this kind of stuff.
