Player Rodrigo Bentancur

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He along with Porro has no discipline. He just does whatever he wants. How many times in the first half did Villa just go through the middle and Bentancur is up the pitch out of position and just jogs back.

There are a number of players who are taking the piss. Ange gives them freedom unlike Conte but I’m sure he makes it clear they need to do the basics first. They have abused his trust.

Bentancur and Porro are like 10 year olds who’ve been told they need to play in defence for the first time, and within a minute they’re back up the pitch trying to score goals…

agreed.

Ange gives them "freedom" which results in Bentancur never being in position, Porro being caught out 50 times a game, Romero getting bored and randomly deciding to chase balls all the way to the half way line, Son hiding from the ball, Solanke having to go into our half every 5 minutes to get involved.

Yes, but I think the players have abused that freedom. Ange teaches freedom within a structure not run wherever the fuck you like.

The problem for Ange is he doesn’t have the results in major leagues to discipline them. If he tried, the players would just think ‘who are you’? and he would lose the dressing room if hasn’t already

so they abused the freedom and theres no repurcussions for it? he just lets them do it again and again?

Sorry - do you think it’s ‘freedom’ that means Bentancur goes walk about or even more obviously, Porro bombs on up the right wing every time we have possession??

It’s been happening since day 1. Either they are being coached/told to do it; or they are ignoring instructions. It’s clearly the former (Angeball 😂). If you think it’s the latter, why hasn’t this been addressed?

Yes unfortunately, What I’m saying is if they did that under Conte they would be finished. Ange knows he can’t control them because in terms of world football, he’s a nobody.

I’ve seen it so many times where manager go from a smaller club having been successful but fail at a big club because they can’t control the dressing room. Think of the following examples

Moyes - United
McLaren - England
Hodgson - Fulham

You can think of many more examples…

They are interpreting the instructions incorrectly. There is freedom within the structure, meaning if one bombs on another sits. If one goes wide another comes central.

Porro and Bentancur just want to be in the six yard box on the of a ball whipped in

Good in the right formation with the right players around him. No physicality or pace so not really in great fit in our current line up.

Always thought Sarr, Biss and Maddison have been our best midfield three.

Ok, bit of a long post but bear with me... I find it interesting which players we pile on for the crap we are seeing every week. I see a few on here targeting Gray, Bergvall and even Moore. Look, I get it... we are angry, and they aren't playing particularly well but they have been chucked into an absolute shit show and I do think we should cut them a bit of slack. My son is 18. They are still so young and yet they are fronting up every 3/4 days. Cast your mind back to Gareth Bale's first half a season. We never won a game when he was in the team. Hopefully, these lads can use the experience like Bale did. Now to the senior players... Porro has his haters and I understand but he's one of the few that seems to care... the reckless kicking of Villa players because they were taking the piss is stupid but at least he showed a bit of fight. Bentancur has plenty of detractors too. Again, fully understand this but I put it down to a secession of injuries that have slowed him down. It's clear he doesn't want to tackle anymore. Son is just bizarre now. He's finding new levels of shitness every week. The captaincy is too much and he needs to leave in the summer or accept a bit part role playing League Cup etc. However, for me, the biggest culprit in all of this is Bissouma. People might not agree and that's cool but this man is a seasoned pro and there were times yesterday when he wasn't even jogging back. It was a brisk walk at best. His distribution is casually lazy and he gets blown off the ball by a light breeze. He is everything that is wrong with this club. A guy, literally going through the motions without a care in the world. If he is still at the club next season (which I am sure he will be) then don't expect anything other than another season down the pan.

Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur over a new contract.

The Uruguay international is a key player for Ange Postecoglou’s side having made 28 appearances for the club this season - despite being served with an eight match domestic suspension last year for remarks made about colleague Heung-min Son in an interview in his homeland.

Bentancur’s current deal expires at the end of next season, but Spurs are open to extending the former Juventus player’s terms.

Indeed, Mail Sport understands preliminary discussions over a new deal are underway with a view to securing the 27-year-old’s long-term future at the club.

Talks are at a very early stage with no agreement close, with future meetings planned in the coming weeks.

But Spurs are willing to extend their midfielder’s current deal given his status as an integral first team player.

Bentancur’s career in north London has been struck by injury problems. He suffered an ACL injury in February 2023 before sustaining an ankle ligament issue later the same year.

Postecoglou, though, views the South American as a vital member of his team and will be keen for his long-term future to be tied up.

Good news, we have to get rid of either Bentancur or Bissouma which is a no-brainer.

Surprised people don't rate Bentancur higher. I have him on a different planet to Bissouma so can never understand how that debate is still relevant on here. I think its gotten to the stage where people are blaming Bissouma's poor performance's on Bentancur. Honestly the 2 of them always get brought up together!

Bentancur has had much more good games than bad games this season! The few poor games he's had have usually been around fatigue. Even the 1-2 defeat to Ipswich, Bentancur was the only good player on the pitch that day. I think him and Brennan Johnson are our 2 most underrated players on this forum! Never seem to get credit when they play well but people jump on them at any chance!

He’s got to be paired with someone in midfield who reads the game well, is mobile and has defensive instincts. He’s good at charging around after the ball, pressing, and passing it about.
