It's not so much the 'Levy card' as it is that every modicum of so-called news gets greeted with a home spun conspiracy theory only to later spout some utterly hypocritical face-palmer about how "only concrete evidence counts".
All the while being the man behind the classic quote "It doesn't matter if it's true or not [i'm gonna base my argument on it regardless]".

Sure he needs upgrading, but he’d make a useful squad rotation option and if nothing else it protects his transfer value rather than letting him leave on a free.
He’d easily command £20m in the transfer market or are you suggesting the club piss that up the wall and not protect his value?!

Yeah, I agree. Bent is not a player who will get us in the mix for the title or CL, and we should be asking that of every signing now.
If it is just to protect value, and sell him next summer, then fine. But I suspect not.
Without knowing the length and salary of the deal, it’s hard to judge.
If he becomes one of our higher earners, then we are idiots because he’s not a difference maker and we won’t be able to move him.
If it’s just an extension of his current contract, it’s going to be a lot cheaper than an alternative would have been. And we could still move him, though the club has a poor record of selling players.
I would guess it’s closer to the former because this has been a poorly run footballing club for the most part of the last decade.

Surely you have to understand that there is not an infinite amount of money and we cannot spend big to get the best player at every position.

Well no but it's pretty useful to have that context for the squad. Devine and Abbott both signed new deals in the summer, a 1 year extension or a 5 year deal tell very different stories on how the club views them.
