In both UEFA and the EPL you are only allowed to have a maximum of 25 players in the squad.

The EPL allows you to have unlimited players under the age of 21 who do not have to be included in the squad of 25. So Bergvall and Gray etc do not have to be included in the EPL squad of 25.

However UEFA rules say that players under the age of 21 who have not been at the club for a minimum of 2 years have to be included in the UEFA squad of 25.

I’m really confused about how we are displaying this data. So let’s keep this simple.

UEFA rules are more stringent than EPL so let’s use theirs. UEFA allows in a 25 man squad
a) 17 Johnny foreigners max
b) 4 home grown non-club trained slots but any extra here reduce your max in a) above
c) 4 home grown club trained slots but any extra reduce your max in a) and b) above
d) unlimited under 21’s

So ideally we want minimum 4 b‘s which we have in Forster, Spence, Maddison, Gray and Johnson and will still have even if Spence is sold (hopefully not)

We want 4 c’s but we only have 3 in Austin, Whiteman and Skipp. If Skipp is sold and Whiteman isn’t picked (do you need 4 GK in a 25 man squad particularly if your U21 GK could do the job?) then we only have 1.

We have a shit ton of d) who look decent as subs / alternates.

My only question, I’m thinking Bergvall and Veliz will be a d) even though not HG? If U21 doesn’t matter which association trained for Sarr when he was that age?

The UEFA rules are more detailed than many understand, so the analysis above is less easy to understand than I'd like as we start off with too large a squad to register - and its that which makes data looks confusing.

In summary, and answering your points :

We are likely to have only 2 Club trained players and hence only 23 players registered in the squad rather than 25 (due to having 2 less CT's) - Austin and Skipp who have experience to play.

No point in adding a 4th GK in Whiteman unless Ange thinks he is better than Forster other than if it looks Ange has a bigger squad (misleading if Ange would never play him).

Ange may want/need more than 23 players - and if so can get that with UEFA list B players (ie u21 and 2 years at Spurs) such as Devine, Scarlett, Donley but NOT Veliz, Gray, Bergvall etc who would need to be registered and counted within the 23 players.

Sarr is not Club Trained and as an over 21 needs to be registered as Overseas Trained and counted as one of the 23 man squad..

We do now have more players who are HG (trained at clubs affiliated to the FA or FAW) than the minimum - and that can be accommodated by having fewer than 17 overseas trained players.

The key takeaway is that we do have more players in the squad that can be accommodated within the UEFA rules (if we include Spence) - so to allow us to register all the players, we need to offload 3 players and my suggestions would be Lo Celso, Gil and Solomon (members of last year's squad) plus Reguilon (loaned out last season).

So does the EPL squad have to be the same players as the Europa squad? Or could you in theory have 25 different players for each comp?

You can in theory have 2 squads of totally different players, but nobody does as the costs of having 50 players on a full salary would screw up even ManCity's very flexible finances, as well create player riots from those excluded from playing in both europe and PL.

There have been a few seasons where Spurs have had a one or two players eligible to play PL and domestic cups but not uefa, and its perfectly possible that Ange decides to arrive at this position this season.

I think it will become clearer towards the end of pre-season how the squad shapes up as to whether that is the route we go down - as an example it maybe Bergvall is chosen to play PL and domestic cups as an u21 but Ange feels he cannot give him an Overseas Trained spot in uefa's EL squad.

Assuming Royal, Reguillon and Gil all leave then our EPL squad would have 15 NHG and 8 HG.
So we could buy 2 more players over 21 eligible for domestic games and as many U21s as we like.

However with those three gone our UEFA squad would look like this:

NHGCLUB TRAINED
1VICARIO1AUSTIN
2PORRO2WHITEMAN
3UDOGIE3SKIPP
4ROMERO
5DRAGUSINASSOCIATION
6VDV1FORSTER
7BISSOUMA2DAVIES
8SARR3MADDISON
9GLC4JOHNSON
10BENTANCUR5SPENCE
11WERNER6PHILLIPS
12SOLOMON7GRAY
13KULUSEVSKI
14RICHARLISON
15SON
16BERGVALL
17VELIZ

UEFA rules mean that we are only allowed a maximum of 21 non club trained players.
So, as per above we would have 17 NHG and 7 Association players totalling 24.
So we have to remove 3 more players from the list
Chances are Phillips and Veliz will be loaned but that still means we have to "lose" at least one more player.

Will just have to fill the club trained gaps with under 21s who are eligible.

Assuming that Lo Celso and Royal follow Gil out of the door, our defence and midfield options already don't look too bad given how Devine and Donley have looked in preseason matches :

RB - Porro, Spence (also Gray)
LB - Udogie, Davies (plus Donley v weaker teams as he is technically good as inverted LB but lacks the speed) also Spence or even Ven de Venn
CB's - Romero, Van de Venn, Dragusin, Gray (Davies or Skipp against weaker teams ?),

No 6/DLP - Bissouma, Skipp, Devine, (also Gray)
No 8 - Bentancur, Sarr (also Devine),
Creative 8 - Maddison, Bergvall, Donley

Whilst still room for improvement, the purchase of Gray and Bergvall, rehabilitation of Spence and form of youngsters Donley and Devine has really improved the options we have.

Probably the weakest area is that LCB/LB type of position, but its perfectly possible that in one of the remaining preseason games Spence excels as LB or Donley continues to show he could play LB. And its still possible we buy one player in that position.

Either way we seem so much more improved in depth and quality compared to last season - and one more likely able to play 60 games .next season than last years squad who looked stretched to play 40 games.

Provided Ange plays Devine and Donley more than say 1,500 minutes each (16 full games equivalent) I think they'll learn a lot more than on loan, and then be able to kick on again in 25/26.

I think we will sign 2 new players over 21.
I can't imagine those players will sign if they can't play in Europe.
So will Ange not pick Gray for EL?
I can't imagine him not picking Bergvall.
Three other players are possible omissions. Richarlison, Solomon and GLC.

Numbers wise we need to 'lose' at least 4 players - I'm hoping for Lo Celso, Reguilon, Solomon, Veliz (on loan) out (after Gil) - see OP on this thread.

I think we will sign a striker,. but only if Richarlison is sold for big money (eg Saudis).

I can't see Gray or Bergvall being omitted from EL squad based upon their preseason results which if anything highlighted that Bissouma, Sarr and Bentancur (due to injury probably) were sub parr in last few months of season.

atm I'm hoping Ange includes Donley, Devine and Lankshear in the squad going forward as all three seem to be technically as good or better than many in the squad, physically ready for PL and have the forward thinking and passing which the squad needs.

Surely they coulda done some 'funny graphic' where Vicario simply 'hands over' his number to Udogie?

Strange that Udogie has gone for 13 (clearly as unsuperstitious as Vicario was) especially as the #3 shirt will surely be freed up in the next week or so?

Royal apparently agreed personal terms with AC Milan some time ago - so no real need for him to be personally involved atm - , just a question of AC Milan agreeing terms acceptable to Spurs.

Wouldn't surprise me if he stays in Korea and travels back with rest of Spurs after Saturday's match - or if deal concluded before then, he catches separate plane to Milan later this week
