Omitting Werner could release the final change of the maximum 3 allowed changes to the current squad.
The new player could be either HG or NHG, but if U21, would still need to included in the main squad, maximum allowed 23.

In theory, we could recall B list players currently on loan, Donley, Craig, Scarlett and Devine, and they would all be eligible to play.

Again, in theory, Robson (CT) could be added to the squad to make it 24 men.

Worth noting that now Son;s one year contract extension has been announced that all players with contracts which end in the summer are quite likely to leave then - the only play with a summer 2025 contract end who might still negotiate a contract extension imo is Ben Davies.

In terms of those with contracts ending in 2026, the inconsistent Bissouma' is probably the most likely to be sold either later this window or the summer. Bentancur who has not consistently returned to his playing heights pre injury might also follow him out of the door in the summer. Both are unusual players in having their contracts run down to under 2 years left - usually players of their age will have agreed a new contract by now, Gil (currently on loan) could be sold either this window or next window leaving youngsters who will either agree contract extensions or be sold - but those decisions may not be taken until summer.

What are the rules on January signings?

The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Europa Conference League knockout hopefuls are allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players during the winter. Since 2018/19, it no longer matters whether those players have already played in the competition for another club, even for another club still in the competition.

When will squad changes be confirmed?

Clubs have until 24:00 CET on Thursday 2 February to communicate their desired squad changes. Once all teams' changes are approved by UEFA in each competition, the full list of ins and outs will be published on UEFA.com.

Dates for the current season.

Article 32 Subsequent registration

32.01
After the completion of the league phase and before the start of the knockout phase, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players for the remaining matches in the current competition. Such registrations must be completed by 6 February 2025 (24:00 CET) at the latest.

Swap Bergvall for Kulu and then the average age of the starting 11 is under 21

Latest rumour is that Odobert will be fit again mid-February.
If we can avoid the playoff games in January then the next EL game is not until March 6 when Odobert is potentially fit again.
Likely then that Spence will swap with another player. Must be odds on Werner.
Obviously, Kinsky will be added to the squad, so the question is, will we swap someone else out for a new player?

Spence for Forster (HG)
Kinsky for Werner (non HG)
🤷‍♂️

Seen the leadership group being discussed today. Fuck me, that didn't work. Son in decline (imagine Sterling being Man City captain right now), Maddison fell out with Ange, Romero mostly injured and wants out anyway, Vicario proved quite erratic and causing panic in the backline at set pieces...
if these are the players to lead by example then we're in trouble.
I would like to see the new gaffer going with Kulusevski, Solanke, Van de Ven (if we can fix him) leadership.

Suppose we sign Tel and Tomori, with Spence and Kinsky, that's 4 players we need to add to the squad for the EL and 4 we need to take out.

Easy ones:

Forster
Werner

After that?:

Davies?
Richarlison?
Odobert?

Maybe don't register Kinsky for EL?

Not an easy call to make but surely you can't sign the likes of Tel and Tomori if you don't promise them the EL squad.

Odobert has missed lots of games through injury. I think there’s enough games left in the PL and domestic cups (if we’re still in it) for him to catch up with the others.

Richarlison is also fragile, I’d also leave him out, if we sign Tel, as we’d have 3 strikers (Solanke , Tel & Scarlett) to cover the striker role.

Edit - yeah, just remembered that we can only make 3 changes. So it’s either Richarlison or Odobert.

If we sign a forward too, I think Kinski is the one who misses out on EL squad as Vicario, Austin, Forster is a decent selection of GK's and better to use the 3 changes to EL squad on Spence, Danso and new forward .

Who misses out, other than Werner, might come down to likely injury status - so if Dragusin, is out for a decent amount of time, Danso might take his EL squad place, after that its less clear cut although Forster as a 3rd GK might miss out and we nominate a youth GK as 3rd GL for EL. Lets see at end of window though

I think you might be right,

As it stands:

Forster and Werner out

Spence and Danso in

If we sign a forward on a permanent deal, then surely it’s Richarlison or Odobert who miss out?

Depends who comes in - if its 18 year old Dibling we might decide both Richarlison and (19 year old with 2 full seasons in PL and Ligue 1 ) Odobert have much more experience so for rest of season they are better options than Dibling.

Lets se who comes in, and maybe who leaves before being definitive

The most frequent rumours of transfers seem to be of forwards, which seems logical as we need to upgrade our options whether now or summer (or even both windows). ATM we have 6 forwards in Solanke, Richarlison, Scarlett, Son, Moore, Johnson, Odobert, Werner (8 including 2 youngsters) who play in a 433 :

Centre forward
Solanke
- Hard working pressing focal point, decent goal scoring stats : our main option. Due back end Feb.
Richarlison - Hard working pressing, but other than 2 months at Spurs, has poor scoring record. Not yet recovered pre injury form ?
Scarlett - Young and enthusiastic, very much a scorer only. Good option at end of games. Lankshear (on loan) can be described similarly.

Left Side
Son
- Still lethal scorer and fast/good passing, but at 32 can only play once a week effectively
Moore - 17 year old prodigy whose time will come, but a good option now
Richarlison - Plays LW as well as CF, Same comments as CF
Odobert - 1 on 1 tricky winger, but sadly only seen in 2 games. Due back in mid Fenruary
Werner - Still speedy but lost any goal involvements. Back from injury mid Feb. Might leave if we get a fwd in.

Right Side
Johnson -
More an inside forward than a winger. Contributes goals
Moore - Less effective on right than left but an option
Odobert - As left side comments

On the right side we can play Kulusevski, but he's more effective as a no 10. Yang (now on loan at QPR) could be a good option next year as RW (can also play LW) but lets see how he gets on at QPR

So once we get our injured players back during February we are ok numberwise, but we need to upgrade quality. Ideally a versatile goalscoring forward coming in - but who are the best available and are they a good upgrade on those we have already ?

Here is the current EL squad. We are allowed to swap 3 players.
Must be Spence and Tel in.
If Dragusin has a long term injury he will swap with Danso.
Werner is toast but who will be the third one dropping out of the squad?
Next game is not until March 6.
