I don't know if I'm the "you" here, so apologies…
Yes - there are posters who's only real desire for the player is born from the fact they share the same country of birth.
I disagree with that. I think it's a component, and not even the main component. I also think that's unsurprising and rather normal. Comparing his Americanness to another player's Englishness is a strawman (I don't know that you've used that, but Tucker did), imo, because English players in the PL are completely unsurprising. An American (like a former Saint-Étienne player) is a different story. OTOH, English players are special in the PL in that they command inflated fees when moving within the PL.
No - I don't think the 'Yankee' thread is a serious topic - merely a trolling extension of a long running TFC 'joke' related to that very player and the subsequent 'generalisations' based on nationality, etc.
OK. I just thought it was an excited newbie. Time will tell.
Yes - I do find it bizarre how quickly this has descended into a nationalistic / patriotic mud-slinging match
Well, it's a bit sticky, no? IMO one side is misunderstanding (or, worse, intentionally misrepresenting) the motivations of the other. The fact that you still think Americans want Altidore only since he's American shows this to be an unbridgable divide. I maintain no one is making that case sincerely (again, there aren't any threads/discussions here pushing for any other Americans with the same kind of force), but whatever. Signs we should probably drop the topic.
The 'joke' has run its course, imv
Helps that we've hit 300 pages. The goal was to use Jozy beefcake shots to help reach that milestone.

Do you guys think that Hooper is not up for the task, seeing Hooper turn out for Celtic and doing the business in Europe makes me think he could be a class act in the EPL, he is still young and could probably be a good addition

He's no Grant Holt

On a serious note - yes, as a 3/4th option could be a reasonable investment but we'd still need to bring in one quality unit to lead the line next season or face much of the same final-third 'frustrations' as the last 2 seasons

The thing with Hooper is he is a poacher a good old fashioned poacher, probably wouldn't work as well in the EPL as it does in the SPL, but then again he has proven himself in European games as well

Eperons, you said "nobody wants Altidore because he is American" then shortly afterwards that people are excited at the prospect of their two loves - country and club - coming together.

That sounds like you're saying nobody wants him because he's American but otoh, they do want him because he's American, but there's nothing wrong with that.

I'd say there is no reason for Altidore to be talked about so much in this board since we haven't been linked with him, he was shite last time in England, and there are plenty of other players doing well in other leagues now but don't get a mention here. I am confident that the reason he gets talked about a lot here is something other than his actual football.

My tattoo comment wasn't intended as some sort of punishment, btw. I meant it more as a means of getting it out of their system so they can think more objectively when they get back to football.

I hope nobody misconstrues this as some sort of anti-American thing, it's not.

No one here who wants Altidore wants him simply because he's American (and the other thread, IMO, is further evidence of this--not a counterexample). If that were the case, we'd have a "SIGN TAB RAMOS!!1!" thread. So I don't see Tucker's comparison to Shelvey as at all apt.

Then why else are they making the suggestion? He hasn't been linked to us in any way shape or form in the press. There are players who have scored more and contributed more to their teams available who would cost significantly less money, and what's more the club are being linked to far more superior players like David Villa.

So yes the Shelvey comparison is completely relevant. Perhaps Heskey would have been a closer comparison in playing style and ability. Or Andy Carroll. Most of the people linking Altidore are doing so because they know about his game from watching the US team and no other reason.

That is true - I simply pointed our to Éperons Éperons most of those posts are in jest - as part of what has now become a resident joke. However, some could well be serious.

I wasn't clear. I meant no one wants him solely because he's American. So the riposte of "you only want Jozy since he's American" is a non-starter.

I do find it difficult to believe that Altidore is the only player in this thread who has been mentioned/discussed who hasn't been "linked" with us, especially since who on earth knows what constitutes a "link"… AVB's mentioning him? Maybe I should start an ITK twitter :bae:
