Nothing groundbreaking. But have to lay some dreams to rest. We will NOT be signing big money players! Not even 30m! Funds not free for that! Only way we spend that kind of money is if we sell TN. And that is nowhere near happening, as much as he wants out. And DL now prepared to get his money back. As things stand, no serious takers.

Gedson is highly, highly rated by Josè. It was all his work and negotiating to get him on such a remarkable long loan deal. And may I add again it is nowhere near the reported figures I am reading! Josè believes this year he will kick on, and continue to develop. As I said before, last year he was considered one of Portugal’s special talents. So give him time. Pleasantly surprised will be the chorus. He is highly rated here, and also by the players.

too many irons in the fire to call out specific targets as ‘happening deals’. Creative negotiations going on. As stated before, press not far off what they are printing.

So there you have it....

Tuttosport claiming Skriniar wants "guarantees" to stay at Inter - he wants to play in the first team. According to the report, without Conte the club will give him just that.

Another bad news for Tottenham. Looks like we are going to the season with few (and not so great) options in defence. On the sides, one RB (the new one) and one LB (Ben Davies) - apart from them, Gedson and Tanganga (who are not FB´s), and Cirkin (a very young LB) will complete the squad. And the way things are going, it looks like Dier, Toby and Sanchez will be our main CB´s - Foyth and, again, Tanganga completing the options.

In my opinion, it´s not enough to win at the highest level - especially with the very difficult schedule ahead of us.

I hope they are right about Gedson, but to me he seems like a nothing player who will never make it in the PL.

If he can be serviceable depth at RB for his final loan season, that would be a big help.

We need to make an investment in a proper Champions League caliber starting RB, who we don't currently have. But it would ease everything considerably if our population of "extra" defenders (Foyth, Tanganga, now Gedson, I guess CCV?) could mitigate our need for depth across the backline.

Because if Tanganga is the only real player there, and at CB, and if Aurier's off, in theory we're in desperate need of three genuine PL caliber fullbacks this window (two right, one left). That would be a tall order for any club.

It will be crazy if we only have 1 first choice at both full back positions. That's just a recipe for disaster.

I do not know how the loan was agreed to but I can't imagine that Benfica is overly pleased if we use Gedson as a RB when he is supposed to be a talent box to box MF.

Maybe the whole plan of theirs is to get us to buy him for a ridiculous fee, but if they care at all about his development or see him as a player that has a future with them I can't imagine it is as a RB because we constructed our team so poorly that he is forced to play there out of need.

It is probably too hopeful to think they would see this and somehow cancel the loan, but that would be nice if they could and did that.

It will be even more infuriating if one of the locks for this team is Ben Davies because his "back-ups" are Ryan Sessegnon who they don't seem to want as a LB and Dennis Cirkin who is a nice young prospect but not close to being ready for the PL.

The fact that an injury to Ben Davies would be potentially disasterous to this club and that he is as locked into a starting position as anyone in our club, if not the PL shows how low we have fallen.

I don't think many of us are expecting signings to cost 30 mill plus but there are a few very decent options out there that will strengthen the squad and each will cost in the 10-20 mill range

What i don't get is after 6 years as basically 2nd choice left back, he's now ready to be the 1st choice left-back with no backup other than an 18 year old who's never played a first team game. Has Ben Davies suddenly become the new Roberto Carlos?

I'm not seeing any real logic there.

What is frustrating is he seems perfect for a back-up role. He has the experience to help a young guy get used to the PL, he seems happy in that role, he can be a leader in Cup/EL games, he can fill in at CB if injuries hit or in a back 3.

He seems to be perfectly suited for a bench role and I imagine that was the idea when they brought in Sessegnon, but now that Sessegnon did not work out it seems rather than re-think the plan they just gave Davies a spot by default.

I agree there is no logic there at all. Especially when there seems to be so many LB's out there that could really improve us.

Well, Davies is a decent though limited player, and his particular set of skills just happens to be exactly what Mourinho needs to execute the one-sided wingback strategy he thought suitable for the squad he inherited. Davies can do a job given that role.

But having no depth there is a big problem, and that strategy *also* requires a dangerous, buccaneering RB who is a lot better than Aurier, and we don't have that.

I'd say that top 3 this year isn't impossible. The inexperienced coaches at Chelsea and United could make a huge difference, especially if they start bad. And I have a feeling the Pep era at City is about to finish, hopefully with a fiasco year. And for how long can Liverpool keep playing propaganda football.
