Other than that I’m largely in agreement.
Likewise though, people can try and convince themselves that Dier looking OK isn't something to do with having two guys either side of him instead of one and a system around him coached to protect the defence better.
I don't think Dier is the worst CB out there by any stretch, but a CB that can only look competent in a very well drilled and conservative 3CB set up, is probably not fabulous.
That's OK, I don't mind a system that makes players function collectively, better than the sum of their individual parts, but great players can also look good when they don't have the structure to suit them. Dier rarely did.
And likewise your boy Davies. Good pro, but very limited.

Sort of true, they were only all the club at the same time for one full season (18/19), Lamela was basically fully crocked by that point and Llorente fully immobile and only useful in short substitute cameos.
And unluckily it was the season where Kane and Dele both independently missed about 3 or 4 months, for both them it was the season they missed the most games in their career.
Overall, yeah they were all on the same team but they were never all healthy or in form. Llorente and Lamela were basically finished minus cameos and it was a horrible injury season for Kane and Dele, so it never practically worked out that we had depth.
We also played 58 games that year because of the UCL run, that team was basically held together by duct tape by the time of the final.
Midfield depth was destroyed by that point too, selling Dembele without a replacement in January. Making a UCL final with your midfield pivot options being Sissoko, Winks, and crocked Wanyama is truly one of football's great achievements. Pochettino was actually a wizard with some of the things he overcame here.

The point here was never to start gassing Dier or Davies up as world-beaters; just to give them due credit that they played very well within our system.
If we can genuinely upgrade on either then great; but some posts here a wrongly dismissive of their contribution.

Neither did Romero; if we're gonna be balanced in our critique here.
I honestly didn't pay much attention to Romero at Atalanta, but some of the shit he did with us last year scared me a little. Not always in a good way. But I'd still take him over Dier right now. And I'd trust him more in a 2 than Dier, who's just turned way too easily and spends too much time doing the backward wardrobe shuffle.
There were times over the last couple of years when I was happier seeing Sanchez out there, just because he could at least move and was aggressive, and that's really saying something.
It's a shame because I actually think Dier seems like a more interesting guy than many footballers. I'm Ok with him being in a squad, and it's less worrying in this current set up when he plays, can even have good games, but if we were to revert to a CB2 system, I would really like an upgrade as first choice.
Yeah I was talking in the full squad. By my count Kane, Son, Lloris, Dier likely to start with Hojbjerg, Sanchez, and Moura among the subs.
TBH, I think a 4 man backline asks difficult questions of the entire defensive dept. of our squad.

What is this 'main CB' business? Why is he the 'main CB'? We play with 3 CBs - just because he's in the middle that doesn't make him any more (or less) significant to our ability to defend well. :/

yea because hes at the core of defence. the rcb is rarely going to be able to do much if the lcb gets done and vica versa. hes the one most central to the thing we are trying to protect, so i would say thats the main CB. hes also the one out of the 3 that will see the ball the most as yet again...hes central....
Every time he used a phrase or a player name he said/pronounced it differently.
....And any time he made a prediction he said "fact" afterwards.
The other fella had him tied in knots without even trying.

A few times he had the gall to roll out the line "as a manager" in an attempt to gaslight his dreadful take as being credible....

Our defense is a unit that was operating as more than the sum of it's parts.
Bearing in mind that most teams attack from wide positions; the idea that Dier is doing most of the defending is a dubious take. Aside from crosses, the bulk of his workload revolves around heading hoofballs back up the middle from where they came... And he's good at that.
Imagine if Lo Celso or Ndombele actually played to their potential, it would complete the team. We’d win the World Cup
