Davies didn’t change as a player, he’s just now playing a position that fits his strengths. He always had technical ability but was too slow for a left back but a solid defender. Now his position favors a solid defender with technical ability.

If we went back to our poch formation and tried to play Davies at LB, he’d probably be the same player he was then.

Davies under Poch was good....... Apart from against absolutely lightning wingers; his pace was never an issue as he was smart enough to compensate.

The shit-show that followed and an overall unstable back-line left him prone to his weaknesses.

He had one very strong season but he was pretty much a back up left back most of the time. And during the last few years, he just couldn’t provide any threat from the left side. Many supporters wanted to get rid of him prior to his move to LCB.

But he’s been playing LCB for Wales for years and has always done well internationally. So very likely LCB in a back 3 is just his optimal position.

We wouldn't need a club trained HG to replace Tanganga- normal HG would be enough to fill the squad place.
I said in Europe. Tanganga is club-trained and if we sold Winks and Tanganga and Whiteman is on loan then we would only have 3 players for the 4 club trained slots in Europe.

17 Non-HG
4 association trained - Forster, Sess, X, X
4 club trained - Kane, Skipp, Austin, X

Normal HG would go into assoc trained, not club trained

No shame in that..... He was "good".

One strong season as #1 but during Poch's time always a viable and able #2.

(Remember we used to regularly rotate Walker/Rose for Trip/Ben.)

Many of those same fans would have been wrongly insisting he'd "always been shite" (Ditto Dier).

Thing is, on one-off occasions, he'd played there for us before and not been great.....

One can't overstate the importance of personnel stability and fostering in-game relationships within a backline(*).... (Also see the redemption of Dier***).

(*One of the most baffling things about Jose's tenure is that he (of all people) didn't manage to establish a regular and capable back-line.)

(***Whilst it may be convenient to claim Romero has transformed our defense; he hasn't....... Without the maritaling of Dier; we still looked dodgy..... It wasn't til Eric returned from injury that Conte was able enact a sustained fix. So much so, that eventually Dav was even able to step in and suitably deputise....... Dav being another who'd been cast as "always" shit.... Which was of course another falsehood.)

Getting your signings done early is great and all, but picking your 5th choice just because they're available doesn't make sense to me.

Still, In Conte We Trust
:contepoint:

If you don't get your "first choice" then surely any other player option "doesn't make sense"?

The end of the day how do you know which player is a first or fifth option?

It may be a case that a "fourth option" is so unlikely to be sold that this is why Paratici has put that player as that option?

If a "fifth option" still improves the team and the likelihood to help us succeed then who gives a fuck?

Finally where would you have rated Kulu and Bentancur as options if asked back in January?

We'll be trying to move Reguilon on probably, and loaning out Parrott/Scarlett hopefully.

It'll depend on whether or not Conte wants to use Lo Celso or Gil as a 6th option in attack. Liverpool used seven forwards over all competitions last season, same with City (you wouldn't guess it, but Cole Palmer made 13 first team appearances). Chelsea also used 7.. I really don't know why we should be settling for five and running our players into the ground during a world cup year.

At 33, if he's our first choice LWB, I don't think the idea of Persic playing extra mins in the front three is a great one. Personally think we definitely need a 6th forward, whether that's Gil, Lo Celso or a new signing.

Gil x100

The bottom line with Eriksen either at United or if he came to Spurs is would he help bring either club closer to City, Scouse or Chelsea and in my humble opinion the answer is no.

I don't even think he will start regularly for United (or us) which is mystifying considering that they need starting eleven players now and not squad players.

For Levy to have spent the suggested cost on Eriksen would be a dereliction of duties, when we have more important positions to fill.
He definitely improves Utd, they are awful. Put him narrow left in a 433 and he will work hard, drift around and get on the ball and get them playing. He improves pour squad too but the 343 is a bit of a tough one for him to displace Son or play in a MF pair

I’ve always liked Davies. Really good professional. I remember he started vs United and was getting a lot of shit for it, despite Reguilon also mostly playing terribly.

He’s obviously more suited to LCB nowadays but the shit he got was always odd .. good squad player.

Think it’s different this season….. window effectively opens mid Nov so we can go a bit leaner and then decide what to do in Jan

Agree but he’s an average left back to be honest in a 4. Never impressed me, think he’s good cover at LWB too
