The papers used to pay people in the clubs for info so they would be first to break a story. However; times have changed and engagement is where you generate income - and there is no longer any incentive to hold a story until it is confirmed fact.
As such, it's far easier now (and more lucrative) to report on rumors and speculation.
Clubs and Agents feed info to the press to suit their agenda (i.e. if they want to unsettle a player); and often friends/family of players run their mouth.
Usually, if it's printed in one of the big-name rags (telegraph, BBC) there is some truth to it - i.e. its backed by a reputable source.
