He is. similar how they both started up top but both ended up deeper. If it’s true we’re looking for another midfielder in the summer, I’d like someone of his profile who can take the team up the pitch when we’re under it. Think that ball carrying ability especially away from home is important and think we’re lacking a bit in that area.

Players that can retain the ball under pressure like that are worth their weight in gold in terms of their knock-on effects to the rest of the team and the time and space they allow for others.

Dembele had it in spades and the biggest beneficiary was Eriksen.

The best of Biss was providing that earlier this season.... Advantage Maddison.

More that can do that for us would be most welcome.

Can our boy Bergvall provide a bit of that?

Connor feckin' Gallagher sure as hell can't.

Devine & Scarlett are both 19, so they won't be taking Club Trained slots next season.

It probably means Skipp has to stay for squad depth, & we might even go with both Austin and Whiteman as the 2 back up keepers, as both are Club Trained.

Is there any way we can get to 4 Club Trained? Santiago will be over 21, butt hasn't played a minute of first team football, so we have no idea if he's got enough quality to play competitive football for us.

The logic of these numbers mean I don't think we'll be signing Werner. He's even poorer technically than I thought from watching his clownshow days at the chavs. We can do much beter.

I think Devine is more likely to be capable of playing in the first team squad than Scarlett, but both will qualify as List B u21's so no problems in including them both.

IMO Skipp is here for maybe 2 seasons to take one of the club trained places - we could buy back Cirkin, or play Santiago or Parrott to occupy Club trained places, but not sure whether any or all are good enough. I guess any likely candidates in pre-season, but its a pretty short shortlist !

Werner will either show he's good enough and be signed permanently, or we'' say 'try before you buy' and send him back. But we'd need to find someone better to replace him which may not be easy - need someone able to play wide preferably able to play anywhere across the front and score goals and get assists, probably speedy as well. Would quite like Eze as he can cover LW and CM, with Kulusevski covering RW and CM even if not fitting the requirements 100%.

Cirkin is interesting. He's very good technically isn't he?

I remember Mourinho raving about him.

Do youth watchers think Cirkin could play as an inverted FB in Ange's system.

Cirkin was always rated as an attack minded full back or wing back with decent speed, probably he could be coached into a full back in Ange's system although the FB's moving into midfield would be new to Cirkin.

Biggest issue could be fitness - he's only played 8 games this season with 2 periods of injury and currently injured.

Review the position later in the season.

Yes, the couple of times they've been on the telly recently, Cirkin wasn't playing.

That's a bad injury record, sadly.

However, if Cirkin could prove his fitness, IIRC we have a cheapish buy back clause?

The other Club Trained option is Marcus Edwards, but I'm not convinced he's a good fit for AngeBall and - unlike Cirkin - he'd cost a fortune.

And of course one more option. If Southampton don't get promoted, Kyle Walker-Peters could almost certainlyi play as an inverted FB.

KWP's strength was always his ability & composure on the ball. The questions were more whether he was robust enough defensively.

People talk about KWP, but Marcus Edwards is the only realistic chance of adding a CT first team player, IMO.

No way it’s fair on KWP to replace say Emerson as backup RB and emergency LB, whereas Edwards could be LoCelso replacement with a much more realistic chance of getting enough minutes not to feel simply a sub (Would probably see him challenge Kulusevski RWF, he could be LWF cover and Maddison cover/challenger). Plus we own 35% of Edwards fee/worth already.

Don’t suppose it will happen as no murmurings since Ange came anyway.

People wrote Richie off now look at him , I think Johnson will come good !
I think he'll come good, don't think he'll come great. (That's what she said. )

If we qualify for Europe & stay in domestic cup competitions, we'll be playing 15-20 more matches next season.

KWP could play both right & left as the squad inverted FB and, if we're unlucky with injuries, play 20 or more matches.

I haven't seen Destiny Udogie's running stats, but he's up & down the pitch like a gyro, and he won't be able to do that for 50 plus matches. Porro too would need rest in a 2 games per week season.

I just don't think Edwards is a good fit for the way Ange wants his wide forwards to play.

KWP, on the other hand, is technically good & composed on the ball, essential requisites for an Ange inverted FB.

I think, and hope, that Josh Keeley will take place of either Whiteman or Austin. Both of them have contracts that ends this summer though.

KWP contract is to June 2025, so hope we have already opened discussions with him if we want him : he'll be in demand in the summer, unless he's been offered a new contract before then.

Southampton is in 2nd place in Championship atm in automatic promotion places race to get back to PL, in contention with Ipswich and Leeds for that 2nd place with the 3 clubs only about 2 points apart

Keeley will be aged 20 in May so very young to be a PL keeper - currently on his first loan for experience to Barnet in National League.

Joined too late to be a Club trained player, so doubt we'll give him an 'overseas trained' layer place for 3rd GK : think Austin or Whiteman will be 3rd GK next season as both Club trained

Unless Austin has an option for an additional year, his contract runs out in the summer.

He's turning 21 in May this year (born 17 May 2003). If he plays well at Barnet I can't see why he's not preferred over Austin and/or Whiteman, neither getting much match practice this season.
But I see the problem with the HG quotas
